She's usually only bad for day 1 but is really struggling, she's taken nurofen - any thing else she can take to help get her through 2 exams today?

She can take paracetamol in 2 hours then alternate doses. Wouldn't recommend codeine as might make her sleepy. Bad luck for her.

Gatekeeper · 18/05/2018 06:25

Take paracetamol as well either in between dosage fir Nurofen or at same time. Perfectly safe and dies help a lot. DD in same boat

DomesticAnarchist · 18/05/2018 06:25

Hot water bottle - she can clutch it through the exam. It'll be comforting if nothing else

GetSchwifty · 18/05/2018 06:29

Feminax ultra

Pipsqueak11 · 18/05/2018 06:30

Yes she can take a hot water bottle and has done before . I didn't realise you coukd you take paracetamol with nurofen.

Oh poor her. I really hope things go well. Flowers

8pinksnails · 18/05/2018 06:35

Heat pads that stick in your clothing really help me. One on my lower back and one on my lower front.

glitterbiscuits · 18/05/2018 06:41

I find caffeine can help a bit. Could she have some Diet Coke or similar?
Very best of luck to her. Stress alone is enough.

MaisyPops · 18/05/2018 06:44

I was going to say heat pads for comfort and then feminax ultra (has narproxen in rather than codeine).

If she does that though, she can't have ibuprofen too.

Rainydaydog · 18/05/2018 06:46

Yes have some caffeine to combat any drowsiness from the painkillers.

Pipsqueak11 · 18/05/2018 06:46

Thanks so much everyone - sorry too your dd in same boat gate . Poor things !

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 18/05/2018 06:47

Definitely heat pads. I honestly think when she gets in there, the adrenaline will help to kill the pain too. Get her some proper old school thick pads so she feels secure. Best of luck to her.

MaverickSnoopy · 18/05/2018 06:49

I had this during my gcses - 8 day long painfully heavy periods. It was awful but thankfully the adrenaline kept me going. It was afterwards that I just went to pieces. Some good painkillers will help during but plan some tlc for after too. Hope she does really well.

swingofthings · 18/05/2018 07:26

I would say to be careful with the naproxen. DD took it once for period pain and it made her very ill, throwing up etc... it was her first time taking it. Probably not usual, but if it had been during exams, she wouldn't have been able to go at all.

Pipsqueak11 · 18/05/2018 08:12

Thanks again for the great advice. I checked that nurofen is basically ibuprofen so I gave her paracetamol and Asda only has feminax express which is ibuprofen based so she can take that later. Couldn't find a heat pad for periods so I got her one for a bad back Confusedbetter than her dads helpful suggestion of deep heat I thought!
She's just texted me from school to say she feels much better so thank you MN posse. Bad enough with gcse angst without this on top - French and drama today which are probably her best and fave subjects so I'm pleased for her to have found a way to give her the best chance . Good luck to all gcse students but especially the girls who are managing periods too!

Can I join and ask about heat pads please? PP mentioned ones that stick inside clothes too? Can anyone point me (link even??) to where I can buy some please? My DD suffers terribly from period cramps too.

ColePorter · 18/05/2018 08:19

@Pipsqueak11 Good luck to your DD today Flowers

KittiesInsane · 18/05/2018 08:21

Glad you managed to help her- this will be dd next week for a heavy gcse week too, so I’m keen to see what else we can do to help

Saltcrust · 18/05/2018 08:33

My DD (14 yrs) really suffers with her periods (as I did) - she has really awful pain and nausea - and I know we are all told to "carry on, it's not an illness etc" but the older I get, the more I think this is so unfair on girls and can be very detrimental to study and exams, throughout one's entire schooling in fact.
Somehow I don't think everyone would be sitting in silence and meekly suffering this disadvantage without allowances being made if both genders were affected.

Branleuse · 18/05/2018 08:33

oh god I had this in my maths GCSE. I was in so much pain I kept crying. I think I did the exam in a private room in the end.
I used to have such painful periods for the first few years it wouldnt be unusual for me to faint or not be able to walk as the pain went all down my legs. They were pretty much like early labour.

Pipsqueak11 · 18/05/2018 08:33

I did contemplate seeing the gp about going on the pill as that helped me and dd1 so much but it just didn't feel right for her but i might rethink that and talk to her again as it just knocks her out for the first couple of days. The shop assistant in Asda said they sell period specific heat pads in Wilco so I will have a look there and let you know.

Cecily75 · 18/05/2018 08:41

My DS has just been to thr GP about her long, heavy periods and bad cramping - DD is trying mefanamic and transsomething ??? acids (2 tablets) for a few months, see if those will alleviate her pain.

The pill would be her next option. Best of luck to your DD OP.
