Uterine polyp removal

Long story coming up but I don't want to drip feed! Sorry everyone x

I'm 34 with a three year old DD. After 18 months of over-frequent periods (every two weeks, increasingly heavy) I finally mentioned this to my doctor and got a referral. I have memory issues so it took my DH to help me work out what was going on! Hence the 18 months.

I had an ultrasound two months ago which found a polyp. They showed me it and basically it was outside my womb and they were like, it's no big deal, loads of people have them, you probably won't need anything doing to it. I could very clearly see it was not in my actual womb.

A gynae decided it's probably my contraceptive implant playing up. He said they'd do a hysteroscopy, get a sample of my womb lining just to check and put a Mirena in while they're in there. No big deal, he said.

Well last week I went back for the hysteroscopy. The gynae - a different one - seemed fine until she realised that what she thought was the front wall of my womb was in actual fact a huge polyp that has somehow developed between now and that ultrasound. She didn't say anything but her face said it all. She looked really confused and quite stunned. She showed me it and it looked a lot like my womb but slightly dimpled, and it's attached at the top, to the front.

Obviously she couldn't put the Mirena in. She told me the polyp is a few inches across - pushing my womb out, as it's bigger than a walnut - and she told me is need an operation to take it out. She said I'm probably not fertile and should not TTC (not likely as I don't want another one anyway). She told me the wait is six weeks. She looked quite concerned.

Obviously I'm now freaking out that maybe I have cancer. Plus it took five attempts to get a good enough sample of my womb and now I'm on my period and I swear to god I've never had period pain like this. It's hurt ever since I had the hysteroscopy and I don't know if it's all in my head but it feels like pressure down there.

Questions:

  1. What's it like to have a polyp removed
  2. How long is the wait, usually? Six weeks seems fast and I have a pre-op next week. My gallbladder took way longer
  3. Am I crazy or does it sound weird to grow a huge polyp in two months
  4. Can someone please tell me their story of growing a huge polyp and not having cancer

Thanks everyone.

Hi - update - it's around ten days since I had my hysteroscopy (I had a period for seven of those days but it's over now) and I'm getting worse and worse period cramps. I'm going to go see my doctor tomorrow as I can't find any pain killers which help.

Reading back through my post I was a bit crazy so I don't blame anyone for not replying!

@libbylove Just came across your posts. How’s it going? What did the docs say about the severe period pains after hysteroscopy?

I had a polyp picked up on an ultrasound, so they did a hysteroscopy and were planning to remove it then and there, but it turned out that i had a "generalised polypoid change" (loads of them all over apparently!), so they just took a biopsy of the womb lining and scheduled me in for a hysteroscopy and polyp removal under general anaesthetic. The wait was about 6 weeks as I recall, quite quick. It was a quick and easy procedure. Biopsies came back normal.

Before the op they gave me something to take each day for a month to stop the endometrial lining from growing too thick and so that I wouldn't be on my period during the procedure. Sorry, i can't remember what it was! Do see your doctor about the pain. Hope it all goes well for you, please try not to worry Flowers

Hey ladies! Thank you so, so much for your posts. I ended up in Gynae A&E with severe pain - looks like I got an infection from the hysteroscopy! They've put me on antibiotics and it's making things much easier.

Have got my pre op later today. I start a new job on Tuesday so I'm not sure whether I want to ask for a sooner date or not - they'll probably want me to finish my course of antibiotics. I don't want to go off sick right after starting a new job but it's pretty much inevitable now!
