How to deal with digestive effects of Antibiotics

Had a nasty infection and I'm on week 2 of ABs. I'm aware they kill the good bacteria along with the bad. I'm drinking those yoghurt bio drinks and I bought some keffir which is disgusting. Still bloated and constipated though Blush

Take the stuff once you’ve finished the course. The antibiotics just kill everything while you take them so it’s pointless

WutheringFrights · 15/05/2018 16:47

Bio kult - probiotics

bluerunningshoes · 15/05/2018 16:50

I just wanted to suggest kefir :o
but see you are not keen.

eat lots of fibre, plain life yoghurt, maybe sauerkraut or kimchi.
good luck

Oh I didn't know that.
I am forcing down the Kefir, eating loads of bran, oats, prunes and veg.
Sauerkraut? Will try and get some, and biokult.
Thanks

Try putting kefir in a smoothie with some fruit.

CherryLip · 15/05/2018 18:29

I was prescribed a probiotic (tablet) to take along side the antibiotics.

Rememory · 15/05/2018 19:40

I was too. Is it pointless?

TheClitterati · 16/05/2018 11:04

you take the probiotic AFTER the antibiotics.

Frax · 16/05/2018 12:12

you take the probiotic AFTER the antibiotics.
Ok thanks - I've been wasting my time then during the two weeks I've been taking them. Is there nothing that helps counter the side effects while I'm actually taking them?

The pro-biotics are bacteria. The anti-biotics are designed to kill all bacteria - "good" or "bad". So they will just kill off any bacteria introduced by the probiotics.

Once you've finished your course of antiB's take the pro-biotics.

Is the problem constipation? Make this "bread". Not only is it totally delicious and easy to make (though you might need a trip to the health food shop for ingredients), it really get's things moving.

Drink lots of water.
Prune juice or eating prunes?

Frax · 16/05/2018 16:46

That bread looks fabulous! Ill definitely have a go at that.
Yes I'm eating prunes. I associated prunes with 1960s school dinners and have surprised myself at how much I like them.

I thiught antibiotics usually had the opposite effect. They do on me anyway.

I hope you feel better soon

TheClitterati · 16/05/2018 18:20

It is delicious. You must soak/rest it for at least 24 hours though. I use olive oil instead of coconut oil.

Frax · 16/05/2018 18:26

Ha ha I had already decided to use olive oil as I use that in regular bread. Plus honey instead of maple syrup. Just ordered some of the other ingredients ( no shops round here).

Too much fibre can make you constipated as it's bulks up the stool.

Drink plenty of water and ask pharmacist about a stool softener.

Which antibiotic is it? I've never heard of constipation as a side effect before
