Last month I had a loop procedure [in the UK more commonly known as lazer treatment] to remove pre-cancerous cells. Everything is fine, but I remember reading somewhere you are not allowed to use tampons the month after. Today I started my period, but I am desperate to do some exercise, and obviously things are easier without having to use towels. As such, am I ok with wearing a tampon for a few hours tomorrow? Sorry if this is too personal.

Also at the time of the loop procedure, the doctor did not mention I should not use tampons the following month.

i had this and they didnt mention it to me, it was about ten years ago and ive never used tampons but i would have thought after a month you would be ok TBH.

currantbunmum · 17/05/2007 17:22

I had this proceedure and I was told not to use tampons the following month. This is because the cervix will still be healing, and a tampon may reach the cervix and disturb the healing process. Also as bacteria love warm, dark, moist conditions, and that environment would be created if a tampon is worn, rather than a towel. Sorry if TMI!

generally after surgery/these types of things its best not to use tampons for a month or so. you have my sympathy as am recovering from surgery of the inner sanctum myself right now and would feel a lot more comfy without the pads!

What CB said.

loopylou6 · 17/05/2007 18:23

no DO NOT use tampons, my friend has just had the loop procedure and she isnt allowed to even have abath or sex for 6 weeks, so a tampon is a deffo no no

LynetteScavo · 17/05/2007 18:28

When I had this procedure, I wasn't told anything about not having a bath or using tampons, but I was told not to have sex for 4 weeks.

MrsDiorKeanuReeves · 17/05/2007 18:33

I wasn't told any of this, but it was about 12 years ago.

currantbunmum · 17/05/2007 19:37

Dont know why yoy are told not to bathe, never heard of this before

veruccasalt · 17/05/2007 19:47

Are you allowed to shower - surely not bathing is a good way to contract an infection ? I'd contact your community nursing team about this.

LynetteScavo · 17/05/2007 22:11

Yes, you can definately have a shower. There is another thread going on right in health, about water entering the vagina during a bath. (And they're not very straight faced!)

Thanks so much for these replies, I am so relieved you answered! I was scared I was overdramatising. Well, the decision is made then, I won't be going to the gym!
I was told not to have sex for 2 weeks, but we ended up doing it after 10 days I think? got a drunk, you know it is but everything was fine 'down there' I think. I have had no side effects whatsoever following this procedure. Thanks again everyone, your brilliant.
