Wisdom teeth extraction-any dentists about?

Softlysoftlytoothyouty · 14/05/2018 17:20

I've got decay in all 4 of my wisdom teeth-my dentist has recommended I have the bottom two (which are also impacted and at an angle) taken out and so has referred me to my local dental hospital for further assessment

My question is, even if the top two could be fixed with fillings, would it be worth just having them taken out too in order to save grief further down the line?
The referral is also for IV sedation to have the work done but does anyone know if I could ask to have a GA instead and get everything fixed in one go? I need another 2 fillings aswell but due to dental phobia would require IV sedation for this too; I'd love to just be knocked out and have it all fixed

Any advice much appreciated; I'm feeling incredibly anxious about the whole situation

Not a dentist but I had 2 wisdom teeth out last year. I asked (a lot) for GA and was told a big fat no. In the end i went for it and I actually quite enjoyed sedation!! For all I know i could have been out cold I remember nothing. Seems weird not to take them all out like you said though..

Canwejustrelaxnow · 14/05/2018 21:18

Having had dry socket my worry would be that you could develop that in all four sockets. I would do a bit at a time.

DextroDependant · 14/05/2018 21:20

I had all 3 of mime put under GA (I only had 3). I did get dry socket buy only in one site. It took me a good 2 weeks to recover.

I vote for getting it all done at once.

Nousernameforme · 14/05/2018 21:25

I had two out with just a local. Genuine question why do you need the sedation/GA? Is it something you are nervous about? It's over quickly and the recovery is quicker without having to come round from sedation.

DextroDependant · 14/05/2018 21:29

I was never given an option due to them being impacted.

Twiceaday · 14/05/2018 21:29

given your anxiety OP I think that you should certainly discuss the option of having all 4 wisdom teeth out in one session. An oral surgeon may also suggest a full GA anyway if the lower teeth are unfavourably positioned and the surgery may be tricky. Decay in wisdom teeth is certainly a valid reason to remove them. Also if they have decayed because they have been hard to reach to clean then they may decay again around the fillings later down the line. Speak to the oral surgeon at your assessment appointment and discuss your concerns. You should be given a choice of treatment options and choose the best one for you.

I recently had a referral to get one removed and the consultant said I had a choice of local or general. She wouldn't even contemplate removing the other wisdom teeth even though I have issues with those too.

Mrsmorton · 14/05/2018 21:30

Yes, get all 4 out. They're difficult to fix, completely pointless for almost everyone and the top ones will likely become troublesome and overerupt when the bottom ones are gone.

Nousername you are commenting on something you have no experience of other than your own treatment. Some cases are much better done under GA/sedation, some are easy and suitable for local anaesthetic. That's for the OP and her dental surgeon to decide.

Disclaimer... it's nearly 3 years since I saw a patient but I did years and years of OOO clinics & wisdom teeth were regular business.

CherryBlossom23 · 15/05/2018 21:54

Your bottom teeth similar to how mine were - I had all four removed under GA. There was nothing wrong with my top ones at the time but the surgeon said I'm better off getting them all about before they cause issues in the future.
I wasn't given an option about sedatives, it was GA or nothing. If they're impacted I would push for GA as they can be tricky to remove I had the bruising afterwards to prove it.

CherryBlossom23 · 15/05/2018 21:55

Getting them all out, not about Hmm

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 15/05/2018 22:18

I would have them all out. I had mine all out under GA - they were impacted so maybe that's why I was offered a GA. It was such a relief to get rid of them!

bakingdemon · 15/05/2018 22:21

I had all of mine out under GA - not in the U.K. though, somewhere where they're pretty gung ho about dentists' surgeries using one. I think here you can only have GA in hospital, so it may take a while to get booked in for it. Definitely have them all out now if you can - it will be better in the long run.

georgedawes · 15/05/2018 22:24

I had all 4 out under GA. No problems at all and healed quickly. Really glad to have had them removed!

Middleoftheroad · 15/05/2018 22:27

I had IV sedation for mine and it was great. I wanted GA due to being anxious but went to the dental hospital to have the tooth removed. DH came in with me too and I had my ipod.

Hope that allays any fears
