Painful green patch on roof of mouth?!

Bubblegum89 · 13/05/2018 16:57

On Friday morning, I had what felt like a blister on the roof of my mouth. It was sore but not too bad. Yesterday it was no longer raised like a blister but it was more painful and when I ran my tongue over it, it stung like a graze but felt like there was lots of tiny bumps. It’s very painful to eat/swallow in that area. Today it’s still painful and I’ve looked in the mirror using the torch on my phone and I can see a small patch of green in the part that is sore. It still feels like it’s lots of tiny bumps rather than one big bump. I’ve been using bonjela (stings like hell) and corsodyl mouthwash neither of which are doing anything. It’s getting me down as I can’t even eat properly without forcing myself to swallow on the opposite side.

What could it be? And what could I try to ease it? I thought it could be a cold sore but why would it be green?? I’m going to try and get to the dentist in the week anyway but would like to try anything I can in the meantime to help it not hurt so much!

Mrsmirton has seen it all so she's probably right.

I would be half tempted to say yes to the fruit pastille theory but green fruit pastilles are the only ones I refuse to eat because they’re disgusting lol. But yes, I’ve got a dentist appointment this afternoon.

After trawling the depths of google, I might have found an answer: herpetiform canker sores. Apparently they’re pinprick sized and occur in clusters and usually have a yellow tinge. They’re uncommon but very painful and can hinder eating/drinking and are found inside the mouth so on the tongue, cheek, roof of the mouth. I guess that seems plausaible. But I suppose I’ll know for sure once ive seen the dentist. Thanks for all your replies! Also salt water rinses are disgusting 😑

I reckon you have scratched it on some food somehow without realising and some stray bacteria that is hanging around from your tonsillitis has got in and caused an infection. not a dentist or doctor Grin

aimees75 · 15/05/2018 09:46

Bubblegum mine was on the roof of my mouth but to one side. Apparently we all carry the bacteria in our mouths but it takes something like tonsillitis for it to come out. Mine went a greeny grey colour which was the skin necrotising. The antibiotics worked within about 5 days but it took 2-3 weeks to really go. Let us know how you get on. X

aimees75 · 15/05/2018 16:57

Just wondering how you got on Bubblegum?

Bubblegum89 · 17/05/2018 22:41

Aimee so apparently the dentist said it looks like I had some kind of mouth trauma that has caused an ulcer and to put bonjela on it 3-4 times a day and go back in two weeks if it hasn’t healed and he will refer me. So that’s what I’ve been doing but it’s not getting any better at all. It still looks yellow-y green and there’s still lots of little bumps and I can’t eat/drink without being in pain. I’m a bit worried now in case it’s something more sinister seeing as it’s not improving and it’s been a week since I first got it now :/

Get thee for a second opinion dentist and / or a GP.

Lottie7777 · 18/05/2018 08:13

Hi bubblegum
I had something very similar - trauma caused by eating something scratchy. It didn’t seem to heel or change for at least two weeks and it took a full three to heal completely. I saw doctor who gave me same advice as you - give it a couple of weeks. And it was all fine, just slow

Bubblegum89 · 18/05/2018 14:52

MrsMozart will a GP see me about a mouth issue? I don’t really want to pay another £22 to the dentist so they can tell me it’s just an ulcer again lol

Lottie was yours painful? I literally can’t eat or drink anything at all without being in extreme pain. I looked online and it said it’s best to eat softer food rather than crunchy sharp foods as the soft food won’t hurt your ulcer but the second anything touches it, it stings regardless even just water. It’s not getting any less painful, I’d say it’s actually getting more painful :/

Mine wasn’t as painful as yours sounds but definitely tender. I just chewed on the opposite side of my mouth as nothing keeps me from my food. Maybe ice cream and soup for a while?

MrsMozart · 18/05/2018 17:01

Bubble You're in pain and it's getting worse, and your intake (including fluids) is down. I'd certainly be trotting off to my GP soonest.

Bubblegum89 · 19/05/2018 09:22

I’ll call my GP on Monday. I’m still eating and drinking plenty, just if any of it touches the ulcer it’s extremely painful. I might try and pick something up that’s a bit better than bonjela over the weekend as well. I go away to Ireland in a week and I don’t really want it ruined by always being in pain when I eat

I would try “eludril” ideally, or another chlorhexidine mouthwash. I usually use a few times, and then stop to give the ulcers time to heal. (I’m massively prone to mouth ulcers).

Hi OP,

I really sympathise I've had various mouth infections over the years for one reason or another. Get some Oragel. It's a very effective numbing gel and is very strong so it will at least allow you to eat without pain. Hope you feel better soon.

Urbanbeetler · 19/05/2018 09:46

Can you get shingles in the mouth I wonder? That’s really sore.

Toofle · 21/05/2018 11:41

Perhaps you'd be better not putting anything on it before you've seen the doctor.

Bubblegum89 · 21/05/2018 17:12

Toofle I’ve been told by the dentist to put bonjela on it.

It’s still very painful to eat/drink (although not quite painful enough to stop me lol) is no longer green/yellow and is more red raw. It feels smaller than it was. It doesn’t hurt when I’m not eating or drinking really. I’m going to give it until Wednesday which is a full week since I saw the dentist and Ignacio it isn’t any better, I’ll go to the doctors and see what they say. It’s just getting me down now not being able to just eat normally

It sounds like a cold sore.

Toofle · 23/05/2018 10:51

Have you found out what it is?

PhotoBug09 · 10/01/2019 15:57

Hello Bubblegum89, i was recently doing some research online regarding sores on the roof of the mouth and came across your post here. From reading the description of what your sore looked and felt like, i believe i may have the same issue. I know this is an older post but do you remember what the dentist told you it was when you had your appointment? I am wondering if there is anything i can do at home to heal it.

sascham222 · 22/08/2024 22:13

I’m 5 years late.
The only reason i’ve found this post is because i got stuck in the hole of googling. Everything you’ve described is exactly what i have now. I’m on penicillin for strep throat, and the roof of my mouth has an extremely painful green patch over it.
What on earth was it???
