Heart jumping causing me to cough

This has been happening quite frequently over the last month. My heart will jump which will take my breath away and cause me to cough. Anyone know why or what this could be? Im not particularly stressed although do suffer from anxiety but in general not particularly bothered by anxiety right now.

No idea. I'd suggest a trip to the doc soonest.

Doublevodka · 13/05/2018 08:45

Palpitations. I have the same thing sometimes. You may find that your pulse becomes irregular at the same time. You need to see the GP for an ECG. It can be anxiety related but could be something else physical.

Thanks, its bit concerning and scary when it happens. And it seems the more scared I am of it happening, the more likely it is to happen. Also I feel a mild pain over my heart area but also dont know if it just worrying thats causing it. Ill make an appointment with my GP tomorrow.

I get this plus the chest pain. And my heart racing once .

Perhaps i should also see doc.

Ive had it for ages. Hmmm

I get this, have done for years and so does my mum. It’s like someone does a quick karate chop of your throat when you get the palpation, causing you to cough (although doesn’t hurt). I don’t know why it happens but it can’t be serious otherwise my mum and I would have died years ago. One of those things that have never worried me, to be honest!

Well I went to my GP today and she has referred me for an ECG and blood tests so im looking forward to the reassurance those will hopefully give.

Glad you've been seen and there's going to be follow through.

Well done for going to the GP. And for the rest of you, please do the same. I asked my husband about this when I started getting it five years ago. He reassured me it happened to him regularly, so I did nothing about it. Six weeks later, he died suddenly from an undiagnosed heart condition, aged 39. How I wish I had made both of us go to the GP instead of reassuring myself we were both fine. Ectopic beats are normal, but these things are always worth getting checked. My husband's condition was hereditary and my ten year old is now experiencing palpitations too. So far, his are benign.

ECG Was normal and now waiting on blood results which are checking a whole range of things - kidneys, iron, b12, sugar amongst other things.

Do you think its safe to exercise whilst im having these investigations? I have been running and weight training but wonder if its safe.

Glad it was normal.

Call the GP and ask if you can keep exercising.

pinkhorse · 18/05/2018 06:53

Ive had this for years and had all the tests etc. It's nothing to worry about. I exercise 6 times a week and am absolutely fine

They really should have told you this - hopefully it is safe or they'd have said something, but I'd check!
For reassurance, I have quite a frequent irregular heartbeat that makes me feel like coughing, but after all the tests they declared it harmless, and have been doing everything I want (in terms of exercise, not the part where I live in a big house by the sea and eat chocolate all day...), for just over 10 years since testing :-).
But you're right to get it checked out, hope it's a good result OP.

Cannockcanring · 18/05/2018 07:29

Just to add, they gave me a portable monitor for 24 hours, an ECG in the surgery may not catch your heart at it.
