Hi all, new to this but looking for some advice... my daughter went for her very first sunbed (for 9 minutes!!!) And has been really burnt. She cant sleep, was crying in the shower and keeps getting cold shivers due to her body temperature being so hot. Im worried her skin is going to start peeling but just not sure what the best thing to do it and dont want to do anything to make it worse. Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

What age is she? 9 minutes is very long for a first time.

Google heatstroke NHS. There will be some good advice on there. How old is she?

Any aftersun or aloe Vera gel?

Laurenmcewan89 · 12/05/2018 20:15

She is 18, so not being very sensibpe wasnt thinking and didnt think she would burn... but we have tried aloe vera gel but its hard enough to get it on her without her crying with the pain

Wet cloth or towels draped over?

Painkillers can be used when sunburnt to dull the pain a little bit. Run her a lukewarm bath with some baking soda in it, a bath will hurt less than a shower because there's no pressure and the baking soda is soothing.

Wet a towel or flannel and use as a cold compress on the affected areas. Milk or yoghurt is also really soothing rubbed into sunburnt skin, just make sure it's cool rather than cold.

I think you need to make a complaint to the tanning shop- 9 minutes is far too long for someone with presumably very pale skin who has never been on a sun bed before. Most tanning shops don't allow people with that skin type and no previous experience of a sun bed on for more than 4 minutes and have procedures in place to back this up, so the member of staff who allowed her on really needs to be dealt with. Presumably she will have learnt her lesson and will never go on one again

Sunbed burn is excruciating. I'd go as far to say it's worse than the real thing.

Lots of water, paracetamol and aloe Vera. Time is the only thing that'll really fix this. I'd advise her to stay out of the sun for a while too, weeks even. And absolutely no more tanning beds. Poor girl.

Thank you! Will give all this a try. And we have contacted the salon so just waiting on a response from them.
