**********Pill & Diaphram question*************

Missymissy · 16/05/2007 21:03

I went to my Gp today to enquire about the possibillity of using the Diaphram [sp?] She basically laughed at me said it was outdated etc. Can this only be got on prescription?

Secondly, she presribed Noriday, how long does it take to become effective? I finished my period a week ago.

TIA

i think the diaphragm was not that effective....

the pills effectiveness depends on when you start it i think, did your doc not explain it to you

the instructions in the packet will tell you when you are 'covered' from.

foxinsocks · 16/05/2007 21:06

I don't know about the diaphragm - I would go and ask at your local family planning clinic - they are normally v good at this sort of thing.

And I agree with lulu - read the instructions in the packet for the pill info.

I'd use condoms for a couple of weeks to be sure.

Blandmum · 16/05/2007 21:07

Diaphragm used properly, with a spemicide is not much less effective than an condom, and is far less intrusive.

Many GPs don't know how to fit one properly.

Make an appointmet at the Family planning clinic to discuss one.

Missymissy · 16/05/2007 21:08

Can the diaphram be bought over the cunter though?

Also, the reason I'm unsure of when pill is effective is because I only came off the depo injection, my periods havent returned properly, ie I did have a period of sorts but only very light bleed and only for two days so really confused and doctor just seemed to want me out of surgery asap.

counter even

at cunter!

why not use condoms for another cycle, in addition to the pill?

Blandmum · 16/05/2007 21:10

LOL at the typo!

No, you need to have it fitted, they come in different sizes. If it doesn't fit, it will be useless.

You could buy a femidom over the counter

foxinsocks · 16/05/2007 21:11

find your nearest FPC - seriously, they are normally much better than the GP at this sort of thing.

Missymissy · 16/05/2007 21:12

I hate condoms though, but better that than unwanted pregnancy.

I didn't realise diaphrams have to be fitted, I thought you just did it yourself at home.

So and sorry for being so blunt MB but do you get more erm sensation with a femidom?

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 16/05/2007 21:14

no, you do do it yourself. But they come in - different sizes - here, read about it

I found them a faff. They are a bit fiddly and you have to remember to put it in in advance of any nooky.

Blandmum · 16/05/2007 21:14

Oh, once you have your own, you wang it in prior to having sex.

You just need the right size for you. And also the right type, there are differences in the springs round the rim, depending on what your pelvis is like and you pelvic floor muscles.

A FPC nurse will fit you with one, and later you put it in yourself

Blandmum · 16/05/2007 21:15

No idea re femidom, I've never used one.

foxinsocks · 16/05/2007 21:15

family planning - you can look up a clinic on here

Missymissy · 16/05/2007 21:17

Oh good, just not 100 per cent happy about going back on the pill, don't know why, I mean I took it all through my twenties, now reaching forty I want something natural if that makes sense. Anyway thanks for all the advice.

(there are probably other clinics not on there - NHS direct would know I would have thought)

Thanks everyone, never thought I'd be worrying over contraception at 40.
