Has anyone got any helpful ideas on remedies or prescription drugs that they have tried for MIGRAINES.

I think that the only thing you can do is catch it early - and then it's a case of fiddling around with various different painkillers to see which one suits

Was getting a lot before Xmas and went to doctor who recommended lifestyle changes and exercise! She also recommended taking 500mg of magnesium every day for a few months.

Then went to chiropracter - he also recommended the magnesium - turns out he and the doc had been to the same seminar on headaches a few months prev and a specialist from US said they had had very good results with supplmenting with magnesium. IT can take a few months to notice a difference and I can't say I take it very often. The chiro worked miracles for me.

This works like a charm for me - I have classic migraine (flashing lights and double vision) - as soon as I start to see the lights or get the feeling one is starting, I drink a can of full fat Coke (NOT diet) and 2 paracetamol. 9 times out of 10, I don't get the migraine.

It's something to do with the caffeine, sugar and carbonation promoting the analgesic. My GP put me onto it years ago and it's excellent.

I can highly recommend chiro and Nurofen for Migraine, if you catch it early.

I used to get cracking migraines regularly. I always put the down to stress. Ibuprofen, darkened rooms and a few days off work were my usual remedy.
I'm not really one for going to the doctors, but a few too many days off work made me book an appointment and a different Doctor twigged they were sinus migraines, even though I wasn't getting sinus pain. A few drops of olbas oil on my pillow every night and no migraines since.

Sorry, that's not much help on the remedy side but just advice to keep hassling your doctor in case there's some underlying cause which might have been missed.

I get migraines approx once a month (reached the height of 2/3 week last summer).
My GP prescribed Zolmitriptan tablets (had to get the box to spell that), they are also known as Zomig. I also use cocodamol at the same time and that seems to work for me. The only problem with the Zomig is that you have to wait for the aura to subside and the headache to start before you can take them.

I was prescribed an anti-depressent for my headaches/migraines, called Amitriptyline. I also came off the pill which has helped considerably. The local pharmacy is sure to go out of business.

I used to have 2 or 3 migraines a week during winter months only - my triggers were flashing lights (headlights!), being tired, having sinus problems. I was on imigran, and it worked, but I wanted to start ttc, and knew that I shouldn't take it when pg.

A friend suggested acupuncture ... I tried it, and after 2 sessions, I was fine.

That was in December 2005 - I have had a grand total of 2 migraines since!

Wini - I don't know what sort of migraines you have. I suffer from two types. The first is the more typical headpain, flashing lights, nausea, light & smell aversion. I also suffer from migraine that leads to pins & needles down one side of my body, temporary numbing of my limbs and one side of my face which leads to slurred speech. This is never accompanied by the flashing lights etc.

I turned up at my GP in tears one day with the slurred speech etc as it had been going on for 3 days and he has given me a magic drug called Maxalt rizatriptan. Side effects are dry mouth so I always carry gum with them and also they make me extremely drowsy but they are wonderful and get rid of the migraine like magic.

Go and plead with your GP!

My DS (8) has been given a seratonin supplement medicine to take everyday. It's called pizotifen..or something very similar. Has totally cured his migraines/abdominal migraines. He was getting around 4-5 a month, very ill, sickness, paleness, claminess.

He is such a happier child for it too, he used to be so miserable all of the time!!!
