Colonoscopy next week!

Can anyone tell me what to expect please?

I know it's sytaihjy forward but slightly nervous about it.

I've had an ultrasound which was clear, but I have a growing lump in my upper right abdomen which comes from under my ribs. Doesn't hurt but can move it. Sonographer said possible hernia. Doctor wasn't too sure and urgently referred me to surgeon. Second doctor said possible cyst and ordered emergency bloods. Bloods are ok apart from abnormal bilirubin level which are high (Not majorly). Saw surgeon he asked about Colon Cancer and crohns in family. No history of it from what I know. Revered me for an urgent colonoscopy within 2 week which is Tuesday. If clear a CT will be done- surgeon didn't want to do one straight away due to the radiation exposure. Ready for some answers now.

Can anyone tell me their experiences?

I've got UC (25 years) and I agree that the prep is the worst part of the procedure. The prep makes me sick but is more bearable when ice cold & I hold my nose don't ask

The good think with colonoscopies is they can see things on screen and give you the report on the same day, except for any biopsies which take a bit longer.

What other tests are they doing & are LFT's normal? ( just with you saying bilirubin was higher)

Good luck op,

I've had a lot of colonoscopies (lucky me!).

My tip would be not to eat too much in the 24 hours before you start taking the bowel prep solution.

I just eat small things which include protein. This seems to make it easier when the bowel prep starts working.

The more food you've eaten, the longer you'll be sitting on the toilet.

This is only my tip by the way, and not official advice. Good luck!

Thank you for replying everyone, I feel alot more at ease after hearing a couple of stories.

Scotchegg- All my over LFTs were normal. A couple were close to the top borderline but still within normal limits. A couple of my WBC were close to the high borderline too bit again within normal range. Kidney function test was fine.

All they've mentioned so far is a Colonoscopy and if that's clear I'm assuming Its the waiting game to see the surgeon again then booking in for a CT

I had to have a lie residue diet for a week prior which I found hard, eating foods I didn’t normally eat, low fibre foods. The sedation is instant once administered, I remember nothing of the procedure.

Thank You, I've had a crossiant for breakfast and pasta with cheese for dinner..

Just water now Envy

Thank you Molly.

Felt fine until I woke this AM. Woke such a bad headache. Started drinking my second half of Bowel prep this AM drunk 3/4 and had to stop as I keep commuting but I think everything is clear.

Will I be ok not drinking the last bit?

Best to drink it all... (sorry) Thanks

Move12345 · 15/05/2018 08:55

My options are Entodox or Sedation

Light sedation for me! Hope it goes well.

Frosty66612 · 15/05/2018 09:48

I’d recommend the sedation unless you have a low pain threshold and don’t suffer from any anxiety. Hope it all goes ok

Frosty66612 · 15/05/2018 09:49

Sorry that should say *high pain threshold

MollyHuaCha · 15/05/2018 19:10

Move, how are you ?

Move12345 · 15/05/2018 21:12

I'm not to bad thank you for asking. I attempted to drink the last 200ml of the prep but started bringing it up again.

Had a couple of hours Nap and woke feeling very I'll. PR was 100, sweating, couldn't move much and I started commuting. Luckily after commuting I felt somewhat better.

Got there a 14.45 and was in there at 15.30. Only took Half an hour. They gave me sedation and told me to tell them when I started to go light headed. I didn't he said he'd give it a few more minutes but it didn't work. He said that it's really unusual for it not to work and started anyway! I was on oxygen. Was very painful and aboit 5 minites in they gave the gas and air which helped relieve it. Finished at 16.00 so took Half hour. I watched all of it.

Bowel looked clear they took 4 routine biopsies and said results will take 4-6 weeks and I won't see Surgeon until then!

As soon as the took me out I got up and dressed had 3 cup of teas and a few biscuits then left.

There was a lady there who also had a clear scan and had the routine biopsies taken who went straight for a CT.

I asked a nurse about a when my CT will happen and she didn't even have a clue I needed to have one and nobody there new about my lump! She gave me the surgeons secretary number and said to ring them once the biopsy results are back but going to ring tomorrow as I want to know what going on.

Also the report the surgeon wrote up about seeing me wasn't correct at all. Apparently I reported loose bm for 4 weeks which I didn't. I said I don't get them often.

Also apparently I denied any weightless and lose of appetite which again is false as I've lost atleast a stone since the beginning of the year and also some days I can barely eat.

Also I reported no other symptoms apart from dizziness. I told him that everyday atm I'm struggling with tiredness and it's only getting worse. And that I also get nausea atleast half the week.

He also said the report that I started I have a 'small lump' I never mentioned the size but said that it has gotten bigger over the past month.

I honestly feel like I'm not being taken to seriously after reading the report

Glad you got through it all ok. Maybe you could write a check list of things to discuss at your next appointment.

Enjoy your meals tomorrow. ThanksBrew

Move12345 · 16/05/2018 09:37

I've got a call up appointment with my doctor today to discuss everything as I'm not best impressed with how hings ate being dealt with.

I know it's not anything sinister but it's still a lump and I would rather know what it is.

I called the surgeon secertary and she wasnt very helpful. I know she cant do much but she didnt have much to say to me at all. I told her about the report being false and she didn't seem to care.
