Sore jaw, swollen face, can't open mouth - what is this?

A couple of days ago I noticed my gum at the back of one side was tender. My gland on that side was up. It's been getting worse since then - sore to open my mouth, tender along my jaw and down my neck.

Today one side of my face is visibly swollen. Feels like fluid (nice!) What could it be??

I've had no dental work, no cuts, nothing. My gum doesn't look red or inflamed/infected. Help!

Thanks, all. It's better this morning. Not completely, but much better. Can open my mouth now. Bizarre.

Yes to unerupted wisdom tooth on that side. But I'm in my 40s! Why would it cause bother now?

It's very very common for wisdom teeth to cause trouble later in life. It's why typically removal is advised when you are younger - especially if they are so impacted/difficult as to require a general anasthetic - that kind of thing is easier to recover from when you are 18 than when you are 40.

Glad to hear you are feeling better but it sounds like there is an underlying infection that may have subsided. I would still go to get it checked out.
