Nightmare periods

I need some advice Mumsnetters please. My periods have never been light but over the last 5 years or so they have become an absolute nightmare. Not painful but so heavy. I had a d&c to remove a polyp and a fibroid about 4 years ago and they inserted a Mirena at the same time. It was fantastic period-wise but I had terrible mood swings and zero libido so I had the mirena removed after a year. Periods were heavy afterwards but manageable, presumably due to the polyp and fibroid being removed.

Unfortunately, my periods have steadily been getting heavier again. I have to get up a few times in the night and I'm reluctant to leave the house for the first couple of days. Fortunately the loo at work is literally a few steps from my desk! I have researched endometrial ablation but I've had 2 caesareans which is not recommended. Tranexamic acid helps but periods are still heavy.

Is my only option a hysterectomy? I'm 43. If DM is anything to go by, I could have another 15 years to go until menopause!

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give .

I was just like you & as I didn't want any more children had a Laparoscopical Supracervical Hysterectomy, they just take your womb, leave your cervix. Four tiny scars & I was only in hospital about eighteen hours, had it done in a private hospital on NHS, went in about 4.00 in the afternoon, theatre at 6.00, back in bed by 8.00, drain & catheter out 5.30 next morning & home first thing. I was a bit sore & tired for a few days but it was manageable & I was back driving a week later. I was back to normal within four weeks, just had to be careful with lifting until I fully healed. I was 45 when I had it done.

Thanks for replying Nat. That sounds a lot better than the hysterectomy horror stories I have heard!

I had four reasonably big ops including this in nine months, diagnostic lap for pelvic pain, lap to remove ovarian cyst, lap hysterectomy & lap gall bladder removal, this was the only one that I had to stay overnight, all the rest I was home within six hours of surgery. Best thing is to use NHS choose & book to your nearest private hospital, you get seen quicker, are in & out quicker, no waiting for drugs to go home & less chance of infection or getting cancelled.
