Feel your pain. Struggling myself. Trying to do 16/8 but it's hard work.

sparky39 · 03/05/2018 21:23

Started thyroxine 7 days ago so I know it's early days but the weight issues are really getting me done !

It will improve when your dosage is correct for your body but therein sometimes lies the problem as it can take a bit of tweaking to find optimum dosage. Good luck and I hope you feel better on it soon.

Oh god is it hard to lose weight whilst taking levothyroxine then? I've literally just been diagnosed today and started on medication. I need to lose around a stone and am hoping this won't make it even harder Sad

sparky39 · 03/05/2018 21:32

Thank you keel, I'm sure I will just impatient, feeling good about yourself effects everything!! Funny isn't it

The weight will hopefully come off when you are optimally medicated which is when your T4 and T3 are in the upper part of the ranges and your TSH below one. You should not be dieting until then as your body needs calories to utilise your thyroid hormone. You should also only be doing gentle exercise such as walking or swimming as exercise depleted T3 so you may get a thyroid slump where you feel very unwell for a number if days and of course this will slow your metabolism and make you gain weight.

Your GP should be resetting your levels and adjusting your levo every 6-8 weeks until you are optimally medicated. That took about 5 months in my case but can take longer. Sadly you need to be patient.

Weight wise best thing to do is try to keep moving with gentle exercise only if your fatigue allows, and cut out any crap from your diet but don't reduce calories yet.

Thanks for that great information, I will try to be more patient xx

Try Slimming World - I dont go to classes, just looked up all the info I needed and its the only way I've ever been able to lose weight! I lost a stone just before xmas.... Shameless to say its all back on!! Back on the diet the last 2 weeks... Lost 3lbs already :-) Just be determined and try your best! Make sure your meds are spot on too xx

Jen10M · 04/05/2018 06:47

And it does take a while - got my meds correct after 8 months and then things got a wee bit easier

sparky39 · 04/05/2018 07:24

i am the same, i need to eat practically nothing tand exercise a lot to lose weight
my gp says im on the right dose and no amount of talking to them will make them ajust my dose

Keel · 04/05/2018 11:52

That's the annoying thing with it chipsandpeas as what the drs say might be in range is not adequate on an individual basis. I always feel better being slightly over but drs are loath due to risks of bone thinning etc. I'm going to ask if I can go over on alternate days as I think it suits my body more.
