I'm not expecting any replies but I was wondering if anyone else on here had this?

No medication is working for me (makes me too sleepy) so I am waiting on an mri scan.

I was hoping someone might know of any alternative methods to alleviate the pain?

I’m sorry to hear that...it sounds extremely painful. My brother used gabapentine for pain relief but thankfully it went away eventually.

Thank you for replying bio!

Yes I've heard it can go away.

🤞

My dad had it for many years. Extremely painful. I feel for you.

VeggieTaco · 03/05/2018 18:52

Thank you very much @softouch

Ask your doctor to refer you to Eastman College Dental Hospital in Kings Cross, London. Hopefully you don't live to far away, they specialise in this. It's NHS too.

You could try phoning the relevant department to see if you could get a cancellation appointment for the MRI which might speed things up in terms of diagnosing source of problem and possible treatments.

I have had this horrific pain on and off for 4 years. Tegratol is considered the most effective treatment for TN. it has helped me more than anything else.

lilcolibri · 03/05/2018 19:39

Have you had amitriptyline? It worked wonders for me.

I assume you have, you have my sympathies.

ZiggyTheCat · 03/05/2018 19:49

I've had this, I'm free of pain and off all medication at the moment which is great.
I found a hot water bottle, as hot as I could bare, on my face helped. I also used music to help focus on my breathing to deflect from the pain. Look up Weightless by Marconi Union, this music was written to help anxiety.
I had natural child births, I basically used the same techniques to help get through the worst of it.
There are a couple of Facebook groups out there with lots of members who have it.
Sorry you are suffering OP, I know how awful it can be.

Oh wow thank you for the replies!

I've been on carbamazepine and a few other drugs, none of which seem to work, and just make me very tired! I'm self employed and on my feet all day so can't really cope with that side affect.

I'm waiting on a call from the neurologist tomorrow, I've even tried acupuncture which made no difference.

The pain is unreal. It's like an intense electric shock constantly shooting through your jaw/ face.

Ziggy I've been told to never use a hot water bottle, but an ice pack instead?

It does help but I think it's just the numbing affect of the cold.

Does the heat help you?

Hopefully this is the link to the UK FB group, lots of useful info and support m.facebook.com/profile.php?id=558857264148050&ref=content_filter

It seems to be a trial and error thing with drugs and different combinations unfortunately.
