dd2 woke covered in a rash today, which was confirmed as a reaction to penicillin this morning at the doctors.

Throughout the day it's been getting worse, her whole body is now covered in freaky pink and white swellings. It seemed to be getting better a couple of hours ago, then suddenly her face ballooned and her lips swelled up.

Just did a mad dash to the out of hours doctor and got steroids - he said her throat isn't swelling and chest is clear, and steroids should make it go down, but to go to hospital if anything changes.

She looks so bizarre - no way i'll be getting much sleep tonight!

Anyone elses dcs had this? Do the steroids work quickly? Can i stop following her around staring at her and shrieking with horror?

Ok! I'm visualising myself opening his door with a swift kick, and then demanding a referral with hands on hips, yes, i can do that!

You go girl! God I'd love to have him by the throat........GRRRRRRRRR

He should fear you, you can do alot of damage to his career if you report him.

WideWebWitch · 18/05/2007 19:14

God, poor you, sympathies.

dd2 is so much better, the rash is gone - even the swelling on her bottom lip. She has her usual cheeky happy smile back and went to bed happy at last. Hooray. Poor dd1 is covered with spots but being very brave.

Thank for everything over the last few days Kerrymum, you've been wonderful and a bigger help than you could know xx

Oh, that's lovely to read, glad she's better. Hope your dd1 doesn't have the pox too badly!

no right to a referral in this country, unfortunately. However thanks to the compensation culture if you mention the possibility of sueing should there be another reaction you may get a referral rather quickly. Hopefully that won't be necessary if you're just quietly insistent.

Your gp does owe you an apology. Personally I wouldn't take it any further if they are apologetic enough that you don't expect them ever to make the same mistake again. It doesn't help your child and you want his co-operation in future.

Boco · 19/05/2007 10:19

You're right tatt, its really important when you have small children to have a good relationship with your gp. Mine is the practice manager, and a really nice man, but he can be a bit vague.
I've recently had ongoing worries with dd2 and she needed an MRI scan and referral to a neurologist, and he took it very seriously and was very thorough. That's all still going on too, waiting for final report from Addenbrookes (although she's fine)- so i do need him to support us. I'm more of the gentle persuasion type anyway, find anything else difficult. But i may give his door just a little tiny boot.

Glad she's much better Boco What a week!

Addenbrooke's have a paediatric allergist, one of a rare breed. www.bsaci.org/clinics/detail/r/39/search/Cambridge/id/13

So if it was me I wouldn't just ask for any old referral I'd ask for Dr A Clark Paediatric Allergist at Addenbrooke's. You may have to wait longer but we've seen an allergist and a paediatrician with an interest and there was no comparison in terms of thoroughness, level of knowledge and even empathy!

If your gp doesn't apologise then I probably would make a formal complaint but if he's a nice person he will be upset enough without that.

hey boco.
glad to hear its all looking a bit lss dramatic!
i am still up for sending a little surprise to each of the girls to help cheer them up if youll let me... cat (or cam or whatever it is these days) me with your addy and ill get them sent. dont worry, i wont stalk you! im too scatty to be obsessive about anything!

NappiesGalore · 19/05/2007 16:54

oh dear, that wasnt suposed to sound like an instruction... only do it if you want i mean!

Boco · 19/05/2007 21:12

Oh NG that's so kind, thank you. I haven't worked out cat yet - i will get round to signing up though. My email is spondie at hotmail dot com.

Had a childfree day planned today - which i've been looking forward to with desperation. We were on our way to drop the girls off with my mum for the day, and dd2 was violently sick everywhere. Turned up at my mums with a plastered child, and spent the next couple of hours cleaning up her, taking the car seat apart and cleaning straps and in every cranny. I wonder if this is still more reaction - or just that she's a bit run down after everything. We did get away, but just for a couple of hours - felt a bit guilty leaving my mum with a puker and a poxy one.

dd1 is so covered with spots now they'r all over her eyelids and up her nose and in her ears - in some places she covered with hundreds of tiny ones.

Got wine.
