my dd is 5.5wks and has had spots that got worse last 2 weeks and very red some white heads. Health visitor last week said no worries just milk spots, took dd to DR today he said same despite worse and said just bath her in water. Then saw different Health visitor this afternoon for weighing who said oh those bad spots you need to see DR and she perscribed some ointment urgghh what do i do?

Baby acne, very common, lasts a few weeks.

Just keep clean, make sure baby's nails are short so she cant scratch them.

No need for ointment usually.

I was so upset when DS's lovely complexion was covered in these spots, looks far worse than it actually is though.

It shouldn't last too long.

Thanks, I think it looks more like ache than milk spots but Im not sure. Some patches are very very dry hence why HV suggested cream, ive tried just water last two weeks and its got worse so tempted to try a test patch of the cream. I have tried test patch of breast milk but this didnt seem to do anything.

My DS had acne too - from about 2wks until about 7wks. He still has some pimply bits but nothing like how it was (which is how you described) I just wiped with cooled boiled water (still do) every morning and night, and if he was sick over his face I wiped that area in case that was making it worse.

Now at 10.5 wks he has milia (white spots - are those the same as milk spots?) but only a few, and I ignore those, although the temptation to squeeze is strong! and as I said a few pimples, plus he sometimes gets a rashy area from lying on one side for too long and I think his face gets a bit hot. Mostly though people comment on his peachy complexion, and I think blimey you should have seen the state of it a few weeks ago!

I'd avoid cream and stick it out for another week or so (unless it starts looking infected) plus maybe use scratch mitts (no matter how short I cut DS's nails, he manages to scratch his face)

Emma, once it had gone really really bad, it will start to get better.
What ointment did you get prescribed?
If it was really dry i would maybe put a wee bit of emmolliant or vaseline but nowt else.

If it's really bad, it may be sebhorreic dermatitis with is a hyrdocortizone and cold cream job. Clears up quickly with treatment.

I think its epaderm ointment I cant read the health visitors handwriting and the chemist did not have any until tommorrow so I will find out then what it is! Iam reluctant to use creams & drugs in such a small baby. We were hoping it wasnt a reaction to the trimethoprim that she is taking for preventin of kidney infection.

All thats in Epaderm is parafin and emulsifying ointment so just a moisturiser really.

Just use on the dry bits.
