On second round of antibiotics for a UTI and feeling so thirsty. Normal?

I had a UTI start back over Easter. The GP prescribed 5 days of Macrobid after the dip test showed blood, white blood cells and protein in my urine.

2 weeks later I went back as I still didn't feel right. Dip test showed no blood this time but still some protein and white blood cells so I've got a weeks supply of Trimethoprim.

The thing is I've been feeling really thirsty over this last week, the sort of thirst where you can't quench it.

Is this normal for a UTI? Or to do with the antibiotics?
Also is it common for a UTI to take more than one course of ABs?

Diabetes? That can make you pee more and cause the other symptoms. Ask for your blood glucose to be tested

BobbinThreadbare123 · 29/04/2018 16:35

Yes, antibiotics can make you very thirsty. Yes, sometimes UTIs need a few attacks with ABs. Hope you feel better, OP. Drink as much as you sensible can.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 29/04/2018 16:38

I'm drinking (and peeing!) loads of water. I swear 3/4 of my fitbit steps today have been from going backwards and forwards to the loo!

Regarding the diabetes, wouldn't the dip test the GP did show something?

Bumping to see if anyone knows if the urine dip-test the GP did would have tested for diabetes indicators?

patient.info/doctor/urine-dipstick-analysis

It can be used for that. Please don't jump to the conclusion of diabetes from a few UTIs. They often occur one after another as you're already run down. It is tiring for your body to fight infection as well. ABs also significantly upset your gut as they're killing off the good gut flora.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 29/04/2018 20:59

It's ok, I'm not jumping to any conclusions, it's just that it was suggested by the other poster but I'd presumed that that was one of the things tested for in the dip-stick (only because my mum has type 2 diabetes and has used dipsticks) and would therefore be ruled out.

Glucose can show in your urine if your blood glucose is very high. However type 2 diabetes can creep up. And can predispose you to UTIs. I am a GP. It may not be, but it is what came to my mind when you descr

randomuntrainedcuntowner · 29/04/2018 23:11

Oops! Described your symptoms

randomuntrainedcuntowner · 29/04/2018 23:16

But yes of course infection can make you tired. And the uti can make you pee more. However doesn't explain the thirst. If you were my patient I would want to exclude diabetes, especially if you had other risk factors. However I am not in the position to assess you properly. So I suggest you see your own gp especially if things are not improving.

Imagine123 · 29/04/2018 23:18

Do you feel better in yourself? Worsening sysmptoms such as temp and high heart rate world need monitoring.

Lougle · 29/04/2018 23:18

So you're Tired, Thirsty, needing the Toilet, are you losing any weight (getting Thin)?

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 30/04/2018 09:18

I don't feel that I'm feeling worse, just not feeling better IYSWIM.

I'm not losing weight (although could do with losing half a stone!).

I'll see how I am after these antibiotics. The GP did say to drop in another sample if I thought the UTI still hadn't gone or didn't feel right in myself. That sample would be sent away for testing rather than the dipstick one the GP does so would show more I guess.

Pharmacists normally offer a finger prick blood glucose test to walk ins if you'd like to know sooner. It's only a single reading but once you hit a certain level it merits an immediate GP referral for further testing.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 01/05/2018 13:41

I never thought of that - I think I've seen them advertised in the pharmacy now I think about it.

I did ask my mum for one of her urine dip tests to detect Glucose (she is type 2, non medicated diabetic) but it seems she doesn't need them any more so didn't have any.

I finished my ABs this morning so I'll see if the thirst subsides and I start to feel less tired over the next week or so.
