Colic ??

Wasn't sure where to post this,so hope someone can help please.
Ds2 is nearly 4 weeks old,is bottlefed(roughly 3-4oz's)every 3 hours or so and is gaining weight nicely, but he is the total opposite to Ds1 who hardly ever cried as a baby and I'm slowly pulling my hair out!
When due a feed,he will wake up screaming the place down for his bottle and is quiet until he's finished it.I can then be taking upto an hour of trying to "burp" him, with him pulling all sorts of faces and screaming some more.Sometimes there's no burps and other times there's loads but still seems to be more trapped inside.I'm using Infacol before feeds to help bring up the wind but to be honest I'm not sure if it's working.
Finally he'll calm down and fall asleep in my arms but as soon as I put him down somewhere,he wakes up screaming and pulling faces again, until I pick him up.This goes on virtually all day and most of the night too.He got himself so worked up the other night, that he brought most of his bottle back up...all over himself and the crib.
It's now got to the stage where Ds1 is telling the baby to "shush" everytime he screams as he hears me saying it so often.
I know the excessive crying, face pulling and wriggling can all be signs of Colic but if he did have that would it all stop as soon as he's picked up?
And if it is Colic, any ideas on how to make him less stressed/help him would be much appreciated please.
Tia.

my first instinct is reflux not colic. DS was like this - wriggling, back arching, vomoting are all signs of reflux. SPeak to your GP but in the meantime keep DS upright after feeds as much as possible ...

OldieMum · 14/05/2007 21:09

I can't tell whether it's reflux or colic, but DS had colic and certainly didn't stop crying when picked up. He would sometimes cry for an hour or so at a stretch while we held him.

I'm afraid there isn't much you can do if it is colic, other than comforting him, stroking his tummy, winding him and perhaps trying gripe water instead of/as well as infacol. He will eventually grow out of it, if it is colic. If you aren't sure whether it's reflux, however, best to take him to the GP.

Good luck. It sounds as though you are staying calm. I know how distressing and wearing all this can be.

not lots of advice altho ds2 was like this. I assumed it was colic and he stopped at 4 months like they say they can do with colic. I didn't do this but i would recommend getting a pouch/sling so you can carry ds around fairly upright and hopefully the contact with you will keep him calm. i'm doing this with dd1 and she sleeps really well so long as i'm holding her but wakes up and screams when put down, so it's useful

With colic, they don't stop crying when you pick them up - it's soul destroying

Bubbaloo · 14/05/2007 22:46

Thanks.

He's a bit of a sucker for cuddles and seems to really play on this.I'm hoping it's not Colic and seeing as he stops when picked up I don't think it is.He's due a BCG jab next week,so think I'll have a word with the hv and see what she thinks.

Morocco-unfortunately a sling is out of the question, although it sounds like a great idea.Ds1 is still very young(23 months)and a very active toddler who likes to use me as a climbing frame.

I have dt2 up now screaming blue murder with colic, he is 6 weeks and it is so upsetting. trying cool boiled water at the mo and he is bringing up wind.

happens early evening until he settles around 11pm it is exhausting for us all

howdoo · 15/05/2007 13:30

Try Colief if it is colic - it really worked for us. Infacol/gripe water etc are all rubbish. My DS1 cried from 3pm to 7pm every day from a few days old to 7 weeks old, when DH discovered Colief in Boots and brought it home - the colic was completely gone within 2 days. It doesn't necessarily work for everyone, but worth a try? You have my sympathy, colic is really really hard to deal with.

Has anyone tried sugar water for colic? My mum keeps banging on about it, and i know Gina Ford recommended it (down girls!). How much sugar to how much water???

It can't hurt to try, surely?

Thanks.

I was actually talking to another mum at toddler group today who said her middle child was the same.It turned out it to be the formula not agreeing with him and once she changed it and also bought some "Nuk" bottle with a funny shaped teat,he was ok.
I also phoned my hv today to ask her opinion and she seems to think there's not a problem and that he just wants to be picked up.She said the screaming would continue if it were colic or reflux and that I should just leave him to scream.Easier said than done though, especially as the screaming upsets ds1 and starts him off crying too.She also said they were starting baby massage in a couple of weeks at my local health centre and that would also really help him settle,so she's put my name down for that, but if it due to attention,I can't see how that will help.
