My DH is mid 30s, self employed and works quite long and someitmes stressful hours. USed to be very fit but family and work committments have taken their toll on his visits to the gym although he does still work out.

We've watched a few episodes of the 'You are what you eat' programme and since then he's made a few comments about getting himself checked out as he's tired all the time, has sporadic sex drive, doesn't feel good in general.
He's not a 'doer' though and so I know that unless i actually arrange an appointment for him with somebody, nothng wil get done and he'll carry on moaning.

My question though, is who can help him? Should he go to his doctor first or can we bypass the doctor and go straight to someone who will check him out for vitamin deficiencies etc.

Your help, as always, greatfully appreciated.

GPs are meant to give you general annual check ups - bp/heart/diabetes tests etc which would run through the basics. If DH is concerned about general nutrition, your GP may have a practice nurse who specialises in this, or your GP could possibly refer him to a dietician. I would not imagine that it would be easy to check for vitamin deficiences - I think it is more a case of finding out due to symptoms of deficiencies than checking the levels - tho of course iron deficiency can easily be tested for. In terms of what DH eats - improving his diet and/or taking a multivitamin are not going to do any harm, even if they don't fix his tiredness/sex drive etc. From what you have said, I would suspect that DH's tiredness etc may well be due to the stresses of his job, rather than what he eats, so he may benefit from advice about relaxation - tho regular eating and sleeping habits will help him deal with stress better.

thanks guys. That Bupa health check is very expensive Twiglett isn't it?
I think I'll make him a doctors appt and but maybe persuade him to let me go with him as he is so forgetful at the moment, he'd probably come out with a prescription for athletes foot.

I think it is quite easy to check for vitamin deficencies through a GP. My DH was ill for a couple of weeks had a blood test which found he was deficent in vitamin D, B and C and also slightly anaemic. He is having another one this week to see if he still has the deficency. Just send him along to the GP explain symtoms and ask for blood test , shouldnt be a problem
