Hi
I've just had shingles over Easter week and I've been left with a pain just next to where the rash was. It's sensitive to touch. I know you can have the pain for a few weeks after but the pain isn't where the rash was. It's very near it so I wondered if it's following the nerve line or something different?

It’s called post-herpatic neuralgia (shingles is called the herpes-zoster virus)

I still get it when run down and I had shingles 8 years ago. Painkillers are the only thing to shift it, sorry.

Thanks. Yes I had read about that. Should it hurt where the rash was though?

In my experience the pain radiates our from the site of the original rash. It does get less over time though, not as severe thankfully.

Yes, it gets less over time, we’ll it did with me. I had shingles 20 years ago and still get some strange feelings where the rash was.

I had shingles 10 years ago, on my back. It wasn't diagnosed in time and left some scarring on the nerve, leading to pain along one of the nerves that runs alongside one of my ribs.

I was prescribed various painkillers but the only think that really helped (and I was in pain for months and months, years on and off) were lidocaine patches. I had to suggest them to the doctor because it hadn't occurred to them and they maybe hadn't considered the very 'nervy' nature of the pain, but I used to put one on and get enough relief to sleep, and give my stomach and liver a break from constant pills.

Thanks all
My rash was on the back of my waist line and the pain is about 5 cm in from that and slightly higher. It's just the skin that feels painful to touch. It's only been 4 weeks so maybe it will settle. I was just concerned that the pain wasn't where the rash was and didn't want to assume it was shingles.

Seriously try a lidocaine patch if it’s botheeing you. I could never even bear clothes on mine

Thanks
