Vitamin advice

Please can anyone advise on the vitamins I’m taking? I am have found myself adding a new supplement to suit a variety of ailments over the last year. I take vItamin D and calcium (had a severe deficiency a few years’ ago and was advised to take them by the GP); Agnus Castus for PMT; vitamin B and magnesium (can’t remember why, but probably for tiredness and being generally miserable). I went to the GP yesterday as I’ve been having pains in my right kidney area. She asked about my stomach and bowel and I realised that I’ve had recurring constipation and stomach aches for about a month. I wondered if they could be attributable to the supplements. I’m 47 and feel peri menopausal, but this hasn’t been confirmed formally. I’m booked in for blood tests next week (cholesterol, thyroid, kidney function) but any tips before then would be really appreciated - happy to be told where I’ve gone wrong. Thanks for any help and advice.

Vit B and magnesium can cause stomach problems, but anything can cause a reaction.
You could stop all supplements for a few weeks and see how you feel. If you're better then intoroduce them back slowly one at a time.

What type of magnesium are you taking? Magnesium oxide, the most common form in many supplements, is not bio-available, so tends to cause stomach pain and upsets, although usually diarrhoea, rather than constipation.

You may have added the magnesium it helps the absorption of calcium?

I’d agree with MasonJar, stop everything for a couple of weeks and then reintroduce them one at a time to try and work out which one, if any, is upsetting your stomach. Either that or drop all but the Vitamin D and Calcium, if your GP advises, you to take those and other than that, just a good quality multi-vitamin, rather than high doses of anything else.

Thank you both for this advice - really grateful. Will give the vitamins a break and wait for the blood test results.
