Any dental experts about? Am freaking out a bit about dd's molar that's got extra bits!

ok so just noticed tonight (she won't normally let me looks as they're breaking through and sore) that dd's right top molar has way too many prongs on it.

there's the normal tooth just like on the other side and like what we have and then there's another layer of tooth coming through further into the centre of her mouth.

does that make sense? it doesn't look right and i've never seen anything like it before and the other one is fine.

we're taking her to the dentist tomorrow but any idea on what it could be?

ok i'm googling and the closest thing i've found that looks like it is a red panda molar!

fine, i'll go freak myself out by googling some more, hope you're all happy!

Could it be another tooth that has no room to come through? I say that because I have a tooth on the roof of my mouth next to the others that came through because it had no room.

she's only 2, it's her last milk tooth to be coming through in that quadrant and there does still seem to be room behind it so i don't think so... also, i can't tell for sure yet as there's still some thin bits of gum but it does look like it's connected to the main tooth

Hope the dentist can put your mind at rest (and hope your DD cooperates!)

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 13/05/2007 21:24

DS has a "double tooth". It's a milk tooth but the dentist said the adult tooth could be double too. I had never seen anything like it (it's a bottom front tooth) but the dentist said it's not uncommon and no problem whatsoever.

I'm sure extra "prongs" on molars are not unheard of/dangerous either.

PinkTulips · 13/05/2007 21:26

that's good to know Shiny, hopefully it's just the same thing so.

daftasabrush.... am worrying already about the cooperation issue, she's decided recently she's 'shy' with strangers so having a strange man poking in her mouth is going to freak her out, she'll barely let me look at the moment!

I sufered the same with both my DD's. DD1 only recently sat in his chair for the first time and she is 7. Hopefully she will open wide for the dentist. Good luck.

if it is one of her upper first molar then it is quite normal. It is called a cusp of carribelli (sp) can't remeber the latin spelling sorry. don't worry.

Babyramone · 21/05/2007 10:06

Cusp of Carabelli firdt thing that popped in to my mind.
Appt very common in caucasions. Dentist I worked for told me that.

PinkTulips · 22/05/2007 17:08

lol, clever clogs... where were ye before i went to the dentist?!

he said that's what it was, unusual on milk teeth but nothing to worry about and the other side will probably be the same

thanks though
