Eye probem - advice needed.

Had really irratable eye last night but put it down to being tired and having had lenses in for too long. Was late,m at a ball, so understandable. However when I got home I took my lenses out and my eyes were killing and wouldn't stop watering. Went to bed and hoped for the best.

This morning my right eye was stuck fast shut on waking and had to be bathed to get it to open.

Anyway I could, and still can, see a smallish creamy white circle towards the top of my iris int he right eye. This is what is causing the problem. The whites of my eyes are bloodshot but especially so at the top. It feels itchy and sore, and like a lot of pressure on my eye. Bearable int he dim light, but waters non stop as soon as I turn lights on or go outside.

It's not conjunctivitus as no longer sticky, etc. and no obviosu discharge.

Have had an ulcer in past - about 3 years ago - but not sure if same symptoms. But the white circle could be something like thisI guess.

My vision is ok, just sore and itchy and veyr iritable as you can imagine. The thing is now driving me mad and I am fed up of the discomfort.

Obviously not GP today so will try and get appointment tomorrow or head up to the drop in clinic at the hospital - assume it wasn't open on a Sunday??? Or can I self refer direct to the eye clinic? Will they let me go in and have a look?

Have to get it sorted as need to be able to drive - have work rest of week and need to drive 1.5 hours to a course on Tuesday. At the moment that is impossible as eyes water too much and won't stay open if light.

What do you reckon?

Damn. Just tried to phone our local Walk In cnetre at the hospital for advice - mainly as to whether I should go in now as just found out it IS open today and until 10pm. But number directs to NHS Direct which justs cuts me off dead after 3 rings!

You need a slit lamp examination so you do need to go to a walk-in clinic or A & E.

Sounds a lot like iritis but the treatment for that is contra-indicated if it does turn out to be an ulcer.

Symptoms are similiar when it is an ulcer and both are excrutiatingly painful so you have my sympathy in bucket loads.

Whatever you do, DO NOT self treat or rely on a pharmacist for advice. You need a full examination.

Thanks.

I have been to eye casulty this morning. It is an eye ulcer. I now have hourly drops for waking hours, plus other drops to dilate my pupils which I have 3 times a day. I then have to return on Wednesday morning for another check up. The 3 times a day drop sting, and make my vision really blurred for a while. The hourly ones don't sting but obviously pain doing it every waking hour. No driving and obviously no lenses until further notice.

So, will have to try and get to my training course by train tomorrow. So long as DH can get me to the station and then back to school with DD shouldn't be too bad.

Won't be able to get into work on Wednesday though which hasn't gone down too well. Have my appointment in the morning and if like normal could be there a couple of hours in all. And then I can't necessarily drive either and it would take about 3 hours to get to the prison on public transport!!! Will have to wait and see for Thurday.

Oh, must sort out getting DD home from school today too if possible, or will have to face the rain again and do it by bus - just resent the cost at £1.90 each way!

Hula I just spotted this. CAT me if you need any more advice. DH is a consultant eye surgeon.

Get well soon

Hulababy · 14/05/2007 16:59

Thanks.

I am suprised at how quick each hour seems to come round for the next set of drops!

What does your Dh think of laser surgery? I have daily disposable lenses at present - changed to them 3 years ago,, after I had an ulcer back then. This is same thing. Again probably bacterial although obviously with the dailies the hygiene aspect is much improved. Just wondering if laswer surgery could be an option now....

Depends on your prescription hula. If you CAT me I can put you in touch with him if you like, he's usually happy to give a bit of advice

Hulababy · 14/05/2007 17:04

I have quite a simple perscription and I am short sighted.

I know some eye surgeons don't recommend laser surgery at all at present, but tohers do. Just wondering what his take is on it...is it as safe as the publicity material says?
