has anybody got any information about these types of headaches and what treatment is best for them. My dp was in A&E for 6 hours last night due to one and I haven't got a clue about them. Does anyone know what causes them or how long they last for?

Thanks in advance

Hello Aufish
was told for 20 years that i had tension headaches
Had massage, various painkillers, etc etc.

Nothing worked.

Then about 3 years ago was told they were actually migraine!
was prescribed Zomig tabs
They work

Suffered needlessly for 20 years!

Just a thought!
Hope your dp feels better

DIdn't the hospital give him any info / advice ?? SOunds like it must have been fairly serious & would speak to a doctor. Hope hes feeling better

Aufish · 13/05/2007 11:34

Hi, I actually gave him some of my migraine tablets last night in a vain attempt of trying to make him feel better, but it didn't do anything for him, so I think the doctor is right in this case. I'm sorry that you suffered for so long with them, I know what it is like when I get a migraine.

Try acupuncture - the first session didn't do too much for me to be honest but after that worth their weight in gold

The doctor just told him to relax and that was about it, which was not really that helpful for us, I just haven't got a clue to help him feel better and I wish I did.

Maybe his headache was so far gone, that medication couldn't help?
I remember having headaches that would last for 3 days, and i couldn't get out of bed.

Perhaps he needs medication or alternative treatment at the onset of pain?

Don't know really
Scary for you both though

Relaxing is hard when your head feels like it's gonna explode!

I get tension headaches. When I get stressed I tense the muscles in my neck and shoulders and end up getting pounding headaches.

I take Syndol which you can buy over the counter and - thanks to a lovely mumsnetter - I've discovered that Boots do their own version which is exactly the same, but cheaper. He could try those, but I'd suggest taking only 1 instead of the 2 they say and see how he gets on, as they can knock you out.

The other thing I do is try to be aware of my posture when I know I'm getting stressed, and relax my shoulders and unclench my jaw.

Thanks for all the advice, have passed it all on to the other half, thing that I don't understand is that he was asleep for most of the day and woke up with this thing.

God, yes, once the headache's really bad, the only thing that works for me is the Syndol. I just try to relax to avoid getting them in the first place. Recently I've found that meditation is reallly good for that.

I did do a stress management course once and that was great. I learnt relaxation techniques and breathing exercises. He might find a relaxation CD helpful.

Another vote for Syndol & also lying down with cold flannel on forehead!

Whizzz

Can syndol be bought over the counter?

x

Aufish · 15/05/2007 11:52

Hi thanks for all the advice, I went and got him some Syndol last night and he is finding there is some relief from them, so thank you, thank you! for all of your advice it was much appreciated!

Another syndol vote from me too! I don't particularly like the spaced out feeling, but it is much preferable to a tension headache. I also try and remember to unclench my jaw and let the tension go out of my shoulders and neck. Visualisation can help a bit with that, unless it's too far gone.
