Blocked ear - narrow ear canal. SO fed up....

Hi

I have a narrow ear canal and it's blocked with wax Blush

I used some hydrogen peroxide drops and went instantly deaf.

Made an appointment to get it syringed and was told to use olive oil for a week before.

I went to get it syringed and it didnt work, Ive been told to continue with the olive oil and go back in a week.

I am worried that it still may not work and Ill be left with a deaf ear.

I cannot afford to go private to one of those posh ear wax clinics.

What would be the next step? Continue being deaf and keep up with the olive oil?

I have severe anxiety and keep hearing my heart beat in the deaf ear.

Any ideas to dislodge the wax?

Thank you x

Same happened to me. I kept using the olive oil and then bought a syringe from Amazon which was designed by a doctor, and syringed my ears about 15 times until the wax came out.

Here is a link to the syringe but you can also get it from Amazon.

Where do you live? The Ear Nose and Throat hospital in London do micro suction on the NHS. Can you ask for a referral? Or ask your gp if there is an ent clinic near you that does microsuction? I have a very narrow ear canal on one side and have microsuction every few months.

Hi

Thank you.

OMG 15 times?

The nurse said the wax was really deep in the canal.

I think she used an irrigator? It was and electric pump thingie

Syringing is not very good for your ears as it carries a risk of infection and is just not a nice procedure. If you have a narrow canal then I would try to get referrred for microsuction. No need to soften the wax before and no risk of infection.

Hi

Ooooo, mircosuction sounds better.

Im in Kent.

Im worried that if I did mamange to get referred Id have to wait 18 weeks.....

As it is likely to block up again then it might be worth trying to get the referral anyway- once you are on their books then you can probably just ring the nurse who does microsuction and make appointments as and when you need - that is what I do now. I got a horrible ear infection from having my ears syringed years ago and woulD never have it done again!

... I mean even if you have it syringed this time then you could still ask about microsuction for the future. Wasn’t clear, sorry! If your ear canal is narrow then the wax can’t make it’s own way out of the ear so it will block up again before too long.

Keep going with the oil, I pop in a few drops and lay on my side for 10mins. It helped me after three days a huge chunk of wax came out, I avoided having mine syringed!

Have you tried bicarbonate ear drops? They worked on my DD. Olive oil did nothing for her.

viiswi · 17/04/2018 18:15

Ooo, that's interesting.

Where do I get the bicarb drops from?
