Two year old shivers/shakes whilst eating...

I don't necessarily think that this is a really big problem, but it does worry me sometimes because ds (2yrs 4mths) shivers quite violently during mealtimes and he even looks a bit blueish - i usually get him a jumper to wear when this happens because I assume that his body temperature is dropping because he is eating and sitting still (he is a very active child) but I want to be sure - has anyone else seen this happen to their dc's? I know I could go to my gp, but I am worried that he will think I am paranoid...

Not had that happen here, so ? GP to be safe me thinks.

Rantum · 12/05/2007 23:06

Yes - it doesn't happen EVERY meal time, but often enough that I have noticed, I guess I should go to the gp...

yes do!

does he get tired eating as well?

Rantum · 12/05/2007 23:08

What do you mean misdee?

does he seem tired at all when he is eating?

Rantum · 12/05/2007 23:10

He is sometimes tired, but he naps after lunch so it is hard to tell if that is a problem or not...

And at his evening meal it is getting close to bed time, so I don't know if he is more tired than he should be. Why?

misdee · 12/05/2007 23:11

bless him. do get him seen as its not normal for most children to do that. GP wont think youare paranoid hopefully.

misdee · 12/05/2007 23:12

just wondering if his body is working harder for some reason at mealtimes, which could leave him tired. a lot of kids nap after eating, i get sleepy after eating.

does he eat well?

Rantum · 12/05/2007 23:17

Usually he has a really good apetite and will eat most of the food on his plate, the shivering does stop once he has finished and is running around and the jumper seems to work - the house is not unusually cold, either. It just seems a bit strange. Today I asked him if he was cold and he said "yes, cold", but he is only 2 and a bit and I am not entirely sure if he really understood me.

Bit of a long shot, but if he's still in a nappy, does he do a poo while eating? DD always used to do a poo during mealtimes, and she would sometimes go a bit goosebumpy while she did it.

KristinaM · 12/05/2007 23:24

I agree with misdee - you shoudl see your gp as its not usual. Does he do at breakfast, when he is better rested? Is he otherwise ok - not unusually hungry or thirsty or tired?

Rantum · 12/05/2007 23:25

That is a good thought - he is still in nappies and he does often need to have a dirty nappy changed after meals - why didn't that occur to me ??

OP posts:
Rantum · 12/05/2007 23:27

Not so much at breakfast, I think MammaWavva might be onto something re: the pooing, but I will see my gp next week just to be sure, I think.

my ds did this when eating, a quite physical full body shiver really, though he was not cold ....

...spoke to hv who checked him out etc..nothing there, though i think they thought it was bit strange..
now..at 3 he only does it when he doesnt like the food he is eating (not too often) am glad to say.....i see him do it and know he will not eat another bite of whatever it was...

hth..

Rantum · 12/05/2007 23:43

Thanks Suzy - that makes me feel a bit better, I'll check it out just in case, but it is reassuring that you have had a similar thing happen and your ds is fine .
