Hypoplastic teeth

Ds2 has a bad overbite and hypoplastic teeth. The dentist said this was caused by having so many antibiotics as a baby.

He's going to have 2 lower molars out soon in preparation for a brace. They are leaving the upper 2 molars in place for the time being. The orthodontist wants to get started on it even though he's only 10 because she's worried he might knock out his front teeth. He knocked one out when it was a milk tooth.

The orthdontist said they will have to fashion a brace that won't rely on the upper molars being strong - heaven knows what contraption he's going to end up with, but it has to be done and ds2 is just fantastic when it comes to coping with adversity.

The orthodontist also said that this treatment may not work and jaw surgery could be necessary.

Does anyone else have experience of this type of problem? TIA

I had hypoplastic molars (same deal with the antibs) but I can't remember if I had them out before the brace went on or after -
am guessing it must have been before - so there weren't any 7s at all to tie the brace to. This was in the 80s so I'm sure they can manage something better now.
The one hypoplastic premolar that stayed had a veneer put on it to protect it and still looks fine 15yrs on.

No experience with the overbite or the chance of surgery though .

Thank you for the reply MrsBadger. I'm hoping too that things have moved on considerably from the '80s. I have the picture in mind of a boy at school who had a brace with a strap around his head.
