Bowen Technique anybody?

Still dealing with my debilitating sciatic pain - ruining my life currently😔 - but someone has pointed out Bowen Technique. Luckily we have a practitioner just up the road from me - who knew? If anybody's had it can they let me know how they got on. Did it work? How long did it take? Was it expensive - I fear it may be 😔. Thanks 🙏

I looked into it for similar issues, but there doesn't seem to be any evidence of it being effective. Have you seen a physiotherapist? That's my current plan, just looking for someone suitable :)

Poshindevon · 14/04/2018 21:41

I found the Bowen technique useless I could not see the point as to why the practitioner kept walking out of the room (part of the technique) waste of time and money.
Find a good osteopath or physiotherapist

I'm seeing a physio currently - privately. Had a couple of sessions when my sciatica was just a dull ache in my calf, admittedly for a couple of weeks. Since I've seen the physio I've been poleaxed! Can't sit for any length of time, sciatic pain shoots down my leg whilst in bed. Was up at 2.00am this morning with it - not slept since. A friend suggested Bowen - and Seeing as there's a practitioner in the next village😳. So if anybody has any other tips - grateful

I have a friend who has had sessions herself and for one of her dogs too. She was supposed to be having an operation due to pain. Cancelled it after Bowen treatments. No pain now.
I'm looking to try it but nowhere near.

DeepestBlues · 14/04/2018 22:05

I tried a few sessions when I was suffering from sciatica during a pregnancy a few years ago (personal recommendation by midwife). Total waste of time and money for the sciatica imo. Couldn't fathom why she kept leaving the room and thought she was checking how her lunch was cooking or something! Smile

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 15/04/2018 12:41

The leaving the room could be part of making it more of a "performance" (I don't mean that rudely, just can't think of a better word). That can massively enhance the placebo technique, which may explain why the treatment works for some. I know lots of people find any mention of placebo to be offensive, but I find it absolutely fascinating and think we should be trying to take advantage of it wherever possible. Even just having a little ritual when taking painkillers can help, but I'm digressing...

Sorry to hear that the physio hasn't helped. Has your physiotherapist advised on why it seems to be getting worse or suggested further techniques? I've found with my issues, not sciatica admittedly, that there is a big of "working through" pain to try and get back to normal. It shouldn't be extreme pain, obviously, but I guess any exercises aggravate the problem areas at first.

I hope you can find some relief soon as constant pain is so debilitating Flowers

DisplacedManc · 15/04/2018 16:21

Thank you @WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo I like the idea of leaving the room, strangely - doing a bit to encourage the body to heal itself then leave it to it. But for now, I'm back at the physio tomorrow am and have a list of things to ask her. I agree with moving through pain a bit too. I suppose I'm not that good at detecting how much is too much. So, even if it delays my recovery a bit, I'll err on the side of caution. And thank you for your kind comments. The pain is debilitating, but I'm hoping that will lessen over time Shock.

I tried it for frozen shoulder - absolutely no difference. Only the (private) physio understood the pain and helped.

SilverHairedCat · 15/04/2018 16:30

Tried it once for migraine / trapped nerve type pain in shoulders and neck. Hated the coming and going - assumed she had another client in another room, so making twice the money.

Felt like it did nothing at the time, but came over so fatigued and nauseous in the car park afterwards I had to snooze in it for 29 mins before I felt safe to drive. Massive migraine started immediately I got home, and lasted 72hrs.

Didn't go back - can't afford 3 days off sick every time for something that seems hocus pocus.

My Bowen therapist worked from home and was actually clattering round in the kitchen during my treatment! What a load of rubbish! Therapist did not pick up the physical cause of my symptoms at all.

If it's sciatica, find yourself an enlightened physio or an LSSM-qualified sports massage therapist.

HI there,
I am a bowen therapist (have been for 16 years). I am currently training in canine bowen too. What works for one person won't necessarily work for another. I have worked on hundreds of people with sciatica over the years. Some are totally pain free after a handful of sessions (usually about £40 per session btw), some have an easing of pain and others (very few) don't see any improvement. The breaks are there for a reason - it allows the assessment process to start - this is triggered by the work we do when we are in the room. Some patients prefer us to leave the room during the breaks - I stay in the room a lot so I can monitor the reactions people have to the work I have just done. I understand some people won't get much benefit - please don't write it off. It's certainly not going to do you any hard and will benefit your body in so many ways. Sciatica is often linked to very shortened tight hamstrings, and bowen hamstring procedures are amazing (used a lot by professional sportspeople now).I have a dedicated patient base and some people's lives have been dramatically transformed with bowen treatment. I'm happy to answer questions you might have or contact me via my fb page - Harrogate Bowen. All the best, Sally

My husband had it. It involved them touching him, then fucking off & expecting things to get better on their own.. Yeah right. Total bullshit! Scam & a waste of money! Angry
