We've never had ear infections here but surely if she is screaming with pain she needs to see a doc.

foxinsocks · 12/05/2007 14:47

how old is she again misdee? ds (5) has this at the moment. I haven't taken him to the doc but will do on Monday if it is still a problem.

Have you got any nurofen - seems to work better on ear pain (though I'm sure that is child dependent). Or medised (which contains paracetamol so don't give additionally to calpol) for night times.

Ds1 had an ear infection a few weeks ago and we had to take him to a&e in the middle of the night he was so hot and in agony.

obimomkanobi · 12/05/2007 15:56

My daughter has had some bad ear infections. I'd take her to be seen. Better to do it today than to be woken in the small hours by an even screamier child.

I hope she is better soon.

foxinsocks · 12/05/2007 17:25

aww essbee - ds is 5 and a half (the half is VERY important!). I agree with the others, if it is an ear infection, it'll probably get worse tonight when she lies down (if she does scream in the night, sit her up - the pressure on their ears when they lie down always makes it worse).

I'm weathering the storm with ds as he is very very congested and I think that is making his ear worse rather than it being necessarily a genuine ear infection (and I know from dd and her ears, that the doc wouldn't necessarily prescribe the antibs anyway!).

ear infections are AGONY. i'd rather go through labour, no kidding. agree with the hot water bottle and get antibiotics on the case asap. don't muck about, they are pure torture. give your dd a wee squeeze from me, but don't touch her face as it'll be agony.

any consolation most children grow out of ear infections as the eustation tube lengthens - around 7ish.

ScottishThistle · 23/05/2007 05:50

My charge had an awful sore ear one day last week & since has had conjunctivitus/cough/sore tongue...Something going round, glad your little one's much better...Earache's agony!

SofiaAmes · 23/05/2007 06:49

Both my dd (4) and my ds (6) had the same within a few weeks of each other. A cold and then towards the end of the cold waking up in the middle of the night screaming in pain. I gave nurofen and planned to take them to the gp in the morning. Both times, within half hour of my calling gp, pain stopped abruptly. Since I had made appointment, I went anyway and gp told me (both times) that child had an ear infection and that the ear drum had ruptured and that child now needed a course of antibiotics and eardrops. Both times I asked whether I shoudl ahve come in earlier and was told no, that there was really nothing that they could have done. the current wisdom is not to treat ear infections with antibiotics unless there is a perforated ear drum and sometimes if there is a high fever or severe pain in older chidlren. (different story for babies).
In my case, ds had had many many ear infections as a new born (until about 18 months) and had had high fevers but no pain with any of them. It was odd for him to get his first painful ear infection as a 6 year old.
