Menopausal at 37, is the combined pill my only option? Is it safe?

This could be very long so I’ll bullet point it...

  • Diagnosed Addison’s disease, anaemia and asthma last year alongside hypothyroidism which I’ve had for years
  • main symptoms which led me to be diagnosed were chest pains, weight loss, palpitations
  • consultant did various tests and also found my body has effectively gone into menopause and has stopped producing oestrogen
  • she has told me this may be responsible for the symptoms I’ve been having rather than the Addison’s etc or at least part of it
  • I am currently on the mini pill (cezarette) which I like as I don’t have periods on it at all
  • however the mini pill does not replace the oestrogen the consultant says I need
  • consultant wants me to go back on the combined pill in order to replace oestrogen

I have concerns

  • combined pill carries increased risk of blood clots and stroke - should this be enough to put me off taking it?
  • if I don’t take this are there any other lower risk options of replacing oestrogen without the risks?
  • what happens if I don’t replace the oestrogen and stay on the mini pill?

The other option is coming off the pill completely and going on HRT but then there’s a small (because I have fertility issues) chance of pregnancy and I don’t want to get pregnant- two children already.

Whenever I try to talk to my consultant about this she just cuts me off and expects me to take the combined pill! I would welcome some different opinions- depending on replies I get I may ask for another consultants views.

Thank you Flowers

Sorry I should add I don’t smoke or drink at all, low / normal blood pressure, very fit otherwise (gym / dance cardio 4 times a week), healthy bmi.

Have you tried non hormonal contraception in the past (I'm thinking the copper coil specifically)? If you were on that, couldn't you then tackle the oestrogen issue separately? I'm not medically trained in the slightest but wonder if the hormonal stuff would be easier to manage without the pill being involved. I may also be talking rubbish Smile

Thank you for the reply, it’s something I’ve thought about but I have to admit I’m not keen on the idea of anything invasive like a coil, due to the Addison’s disease I have my body doesn’t cope well with anything medical procedure wise (I don’t produce cortisol to cope with the stress of it) and I feel quite scared at the thought being honest...! I’m not sure whether just having some sort of oestrogen replacement carries the same risks as the combined pill... I’m not sure if it’s the oestrogen itself that has the risks..! So confused! Confused
