Calf pain

Hi

Im 23 weeks pregnant and 2 weeks ago i woke with awful cramp in one calf, the pain was still there a week later so i went to doctors but they basically said was nothing!

Anyway it still hurts and seems to be worse after i have been walking. I keep feeling lile bubbles popping kind of sensation. The leg doesn't look swollen or a different colour, just painful. The pain also occasionaly goes under my foot and into my knee.

Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this? Im obviously worried its a clot. Or if anyone has experienced a clot?

Thanks.

Well, as someone who was circling the drain with a huge pulmonary embolism 6 weeks ago due to a post surgery DVT in my leg (so am hyper aware of the symptoms and risks of DVTs and PEs), I would say go to A&E so they can check your d-dimmer (blood test for clotting) level and possibly ultrasound your calf.

Pregnancy is a clotting risk so your concerns aren’t unfounded.

2 weeks is a long time, but I suffer from leg cramps and the pain does linger for several days sometimes after a bad spasm. I do recall that the cramps were worse when I was pregnant. I would ask the doctor to check it out again if you are concerned though.

@CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger what were your symptoms? Though assuming you possibly didn't know until the PE?

@MinniMouse I am going to give gp a call in the morning, I have had cramps during this pregnancy before this one but the pain after those only lasted a day or 2.

You’re right - I didn’t know until most of the clot had travelled to my lungs, and as i’d had knee/leg surgery I was already in pain at the site the DVT developed - so can’t really help on that front. But from the enormous amount that I’ve read since I can say that DVT pain is often accompanied with redness or swelling (so your lack of this is good) and the pain can often increase if you flex your foot upwards - so point your toes to the ceiling when lying down. I’d probably give 111 a call if this is the case. If you have any breathlessness or chest pain you must go to hospital.

I am going to ring in the morning and ask to have a scan of my leg, even if just to put my mind at rest.

Thanks for replying.

No worries - and good luck, it is most likely a pulled muscle but you’re very wise to get it checked out.

Did you get it checked out Rainbows? Hope all is well.
