Have got stinking nasty cold and sore throat. Can i still go to the gym or will it do more harm than good?

You can, but you'll just infect everyone and feel like crap. OTOH there will be no queue for machines next week if you do

foxybrown · 12/05/2007 07:58

I think that if its above the neck you can, if its below, then no you shouldn't. So as long as its not in your chest, you would probably be OK.

Unless you want me to say No, absolutely not?

I don't think it's a good idea. Have a rest day, your body is telling you you need it

mosschops30 · 12/05/2007 08:00

i want to go I am on a mission for holidays and this cold is seriously gonna ruin my timetable

so conflicting advice!! Cold is def in head, no chestiness or anything (yet). What are the risks, can it make things worse (e.g. be ill for even longer)

It can be taxing on your heart muscle, I know recommendation is to wait 6 weeks with flu, don't know if same applies to cold. are you sure its a cold an d not hay fever?

Kbear · 12/05/2007 08:00

no, rest is best

Hilllary · 12/05/2007 08:01

No take it from an over excersiser its not a good idea it puts stress on vital organs, give yourself a couple of days off.

whomovedmychocolate · 12/05/2007 08:01

When I have a head cold I still run, because it makes me feel better and it's never made a cold last any longer than three days. If you are snivelling it might even clean the snot out. How about doing a half session and then going home and resting?

mosschops30 · 12/05/2007 08:02

def not hayfever (cos I get that anyway) throat is like a pile of razors and kept me awake.

stay at home mosschops

foxybrown · 12/05/2007 08:03

Why don't you go with the intention of doing 10 minutes exercise? If you feel OK carry on. Perhaps have a steam or sauna if there's one there.

Worst case scenario you can go to the cafe and read the paper knowing you at least attempted it.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 12/05/2007 08:03

mosschops - do the 'neck check' - symptoms above the neck are OK, below is a no-no. A friend of mine was seriously ill having exercised when she shouldn't have.

Can you do a power walk or something similar instead?

mosschops30 · 12/05/2007 08:06

lol at this from some random website

With "below the neck" symptomsmuscle aches, hacking chest cough, fever of 100 degrees or higher, chills, diarrhea, or vomitingdon't exercise.

As if youd go to the gym with those symptoms

Think I will take your advice, stay home today and have a nice rest and maybe do some ab exercise if I get desparate and see how I feel tomorrow

Thank yooo

some research here , it appears moderate is actually good when you hae a cold.

3sEnough · 12/05/2007 08:31

If you have a temp, or suspicion of one (hot and cold periods) don't go as can move to heart muscle. A mild cold with no temp shold be fine although you'll have a higher heart rate then normal and won't feel as energetic.
