Anyone had a dodgy mole removed with good results?

Dh had a mole removed today after being referred by the gp under the 2 week wait. His mole had gone black and a bit crusty and the gp said she wasn't unduly concerned but thought it was worth checking out. By last night the mole was looking pretty normal again and the crustiness had gone so we were pretty blasé about today's appointment.

When he went today they examined it closely and said they didn't know what it was so they've removed it and have given him an appointment to come back next week for the results. I can't help but think they're pretty sure it's something nasty to want to see him back at the hospital for results instead of sending them in a letter to the gp.

Has anyone had good news in this kind of situation? And if it is bad news, can anyone help me to not panic?

I have had 2 large moles removed similar to what your DH has had removed today and another 4 with different symptoms (red, bleeding, tops of moles coming off) but all have come back benign.

You have done the right thing getting them checked and removed, and like your DH, I had to go back in a few days for the results.

Of course you and you DH will be thinking of the outcome and be apprehensive, and fingers crossed all will be well. I can well understand how you feel.

DH had a mole that turned out to be a type of wart. I've had a spot under a mole, making it look dodgy but it wasn't. I've also had a type of nevus, a mole that looks like it is cancerous (discoloured, odd shape) but was also harmless.

Even if a mole is cancerous, caught early and monitored there's no reason to expect the worst.
Flowers for the worry

Thanks both for the reassuring posts. Last night when he showed it to me I felt really relieved as the crustiness had gone...I'd assumed he'd just had a scratch that that gone scabby on the mole and had fallen off! When he said they'd removed it I felt ill, and when he said they wanted him to go back for the results, I felt sure they must think it's something bad.

Thanks for the reassurance.

Another one here who's had a mole removed. All was absolutely fine.

Lightlover2018 · 12/04/2018 19:44

Me too, I've had two dodgy moles removed on separate occasions, both fine.

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 12/04/2018 19:54

Me too. Large one removed, multicoloured and crusty, raised and asymmetrical and was just dysplastic, not malignant.

ScarlettDarling · 12/04/2018 21:53

So hoping I can come back and tell you that dh gets the same news next week. Did any of you have to go back to the hospital for results?

Had a weird mole that had mutated from an old chickenpox scar.

After colouring in and doing nothing for years, it decided to grow ragged edges and acquired and odd ring around itself.

It was removed under local anaesthetic and I had a solar keratosis zapped with liquid nitrogen at the same time.

It was benign after all that....

Dogsrbarking · 12/04/2018 21:57

Yes me. Mine would go a bit crusty and black as it was very raised so would get knocked often. Upon removal nothing untowards was found but it was a worrying time.

Cheeseislife · 12/04/2018 21:58

I had one that started cracking and bleeding removed, probably about half a centimetre in circumference - all was fine and benign, though I do have a scar now bigger than the mole was!

Laska5772 · 12/04/2018 21:59

Me also , a large back mole on my back which id had forever but had recently gone crusty . All was fine.. 6 months later the scar has now pretty much gone also ,

I also had to go back for results ,its standard procedure in our NHS skin clinic

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/04/2018 22:00

I had a malignant melanoma removed. All good and no further treatment necessary

ScarlettDarling · 12/04/2018 22:19

Thanks everyone. Feeling a bit better now.

Not so much a mole, more a really strange freckle on my face. The GP didn't like it, he removed it himself and sent it off for diagnosing - it was sorted quickly that way. It was all clear in the end.

Catrina1234 · 13/04/2018 20:12

I'm a bit confused OP because your DH said the mole had been removed and yet you said when you saw it last night it looked a bit less crusty (I think that's what you said but this damn laptop won't let me scroll up) Whereabouts was this mole. Mine was on my shoulder and when the GP saw it she said "Oh I don't like that" and referred me to a dermatologist on the 2 week appt where cancer is suspected. I was a bit scared (well more than a bit I suppose) the dermotologist at the hospital said "Oh that looks cancerous" (great!) and said I needed a bioposy but I'd get a letter with another appt - that was awful waiting. Anyway I went and had the bioposy which hurt a bit as they took it and just put a big plaster on what was left and told me not to get it wet and they would send me an appt when they had the results. But my lovely GP phoned me in a couple of weeks as she had access to all results of her patients on screen and told me it was a serbaceous wart, perfectly harmless. Phew..............but I still had an appt to go to the hospital for them to tell me. Oh yes I had a few stitches and the nurse at the surgery took them out and put another plaster on.
I think the main thing to remember as others have said is that any skin cancer (if that's what it is) has a very high success rate if caught early, even melanoma. The waiting is the worst part. It's no good saying don't worry because you will but I hope it's all ok.

Catrina1234 · 13/04/2018 20:16

Sorry OP I've managed to scroll up and get what you're saying. I think the thing is they won't know what it is until the pathologist's report comes back and then they can let you know. Years ago the doctors just used to remove them in the surgery, end of matter and IF it did happen to be cancer, too bad. SO I know the waiting is awful but the drs are doing their job and the only way they can find out is by examination of the mole by a pathologist.

MarthaArthur · 13/04/2018 20:19

Even cancerous moles tend to not be a problem once removed. They would want to see him back to check on any other moles on the body to make sure they dont need to remive other moles. I wouldnt worry about it op its most likely benign and no further checks necessary.

Pitapotamus · 13/04/2018 20:21

I had 5 removed about 10 years ago and they all turned out to be fine.

ScarlettDarling · 13/04/2018 20:24

Nice to hear everyone's positive experiences. He had the mole removed yesterday Catrina and it was the night before that that it seemed to be looking normal again.

The mole is on the top of his foot. It doesn't help my worrying that he has always been a complete Sun worshipper and despite having dark skin, has burned before. Fingers crossed.

i had one appear that was a love heart shape. it then grew a black spot which fell off. to me thats some serious red flags, but GP and dermatologist both said they werent concerned. i had it removed and it was benign.

i think GPs/dermas can see things with their dermascopes such as blood vessels etc, which are warning signs, so maybe your DPs mole didnt have anything microscopically that would be cause for concern :)

silver2011 · 13/04/2018 21:41

Hope all goes well . It's hard to wait I have black mole on back which got crusty and fell off the scab doctor checked wasn't too concerned. So try not to panic

ScarlettDarling · 19/04/2018 10:30

Just in case anyone is reading, my dh has just had a call from the hospital telling him everything is fine! It was just a sun damaged freckle. His appointment tomorrow is cancelled and no further action needed. Thank you all for the reassuring messages Flowers
