White specks on teeth - does anyone have experience?

Meid · 11/05/2007 21:02

My DD's adult teeth are coming through with white specks on them. It looks quite odd.

The dentist today said it probably means a deficiency in something - maybe calcium or iron. I've made an appointment with the GP to discuss this (and hopefully get some tests done to get to the bottom of it).

I am certain she doesn't have calcium deficiency but it could possibly be iron although having googled the symptoms I don't know.

I wonder if anyone else has experience of this? Thank you.

i had this when i was little and my dentist said it was caused by too much fluride in the water where we lived. mention this to your dentist too as it is one possible cause.

MrsWednesday · 11/05/2007 21:11

I've got them on mine and was told by my dentist that it was down to fluoride in the water when I was little.

Meid · 12/05/2007 08:50

Thank you for the responses. We don't have flouride in the water here but I've looked at some images of what you describe and it does look similar so it could be.

Any one else got any suggestions?

my dd and a few of her friends have this also, so not sure what it it!

allgonebellyup · 12/05/2007 08:58

is!

cathcart · 12/05/2007 09:05

check the toothpaste she is using, I think you can get low fluoride toothpaste for children. Although, my HV said that because we live in an area that doesn't have fluoride we should get extra fluoride toothpaste - sorry that doesn't help does it?

skirmish · 12/05/2007 09:06

my dentist said mine were from having antibiotics as an infant...but i've read iys from too much fluride

DeviousDaffodil · 12/05/2007 09:09

I have a large white square in the middle of my front tooth. I think I was told it was from too much flouride or a knock to the gum when the tooth was growing (?).
It doesn't cause any problems though and looks quite quirky.

pigsinmud · 12/05/2007 10:42

I have white specks on my top front teeth and my dentist has never said anything about it! I imagined it was similar to white specks on fingernails - which I have too.

summer111 · 12/05/2007 18:29

I'm not sure if this is the same thing that you are referring too but when my ds's back adult teeth came through, they were not uniformly coloured ie had white patches of colour on them. The dentist suggested this was because they hadn't properly calcified when in the womb. He said that it would make them weaker.
DS was referred to the dental hospital in London, where they confirmed the diagnosis. I was told that these teeth would be prone to decay so they sealed them as a precaution. He is reviewed every 6 months there. Touch wood, all is fine, there is only one tooth that may need additional treatment in the future.

The consultant dentist basically said that there was no identifiable cause for this mal calcification -could have happened as a quirk of nature in the womb.]

I'd get another opinion from a specilist dentist if I were you, as it may be nothing relatd to your dd's health

mrsmalumbas · 12/05/2007 18:41

My own teeth have white specks on and I was always told it was due to antibiotics I took as a baby for bronchitis, the teeth are forming at that stage.

NoNickname · 12/05/2007 18:43

I have been told that white specks are as a result of too much fluoride too (HV told us in post-natal classes), and that the main cause was from children swallowing fluoride toothpaste when they are young, way before the adult teeth come in.

morocco · 12/05/2007 23:29

also heard of fluoride link. prob coverup by dentists who seem obsessed by giving kids adult toothpaste these days and love fluoride

beautifulgirls · 13/05/2007 08:46

I was told mine in one adult front tooth was because of a high fever as a child when the tooth was forming. None of my other teeth are affected.

Dd#2 has mottled baby teeth. She has her first dentist appt coming up soon so I shall aske about it then. That can not be fluoride related for her. I had a rough pregnancy with her though, hospitalised at one stage for sickenss during 2nd trimester. I wonder if that has affected them?

mm22bys · 13/05/2007 09:36

I took DS to dentist when he was about 2.5 and asked him about the white blotches on his teeth - he said it's probably due to a virus he had when the teeth were forming.

I have them too, but my parents believe they were due to fluoride tablets which my dentist prescribed.

So who knows the "real" reason....

buffythenappyslayer21 · 13/05/2007 09:46

havent read the whole thread,ut a friend of mine her dd has them and the dentist said it was a calcium deficiency.she also has white spots on her nails.

edam · 13/05/2007 09:59

Excess fluoride can cause mottling, but I thought that was brown patches, not white. (That's why in an area where fluoride is added to the water, you are advised against fluoride toothpaste for children, IIRC.)

edam · 13/05/2007 10:04

pics of mottled teeth It seems (from that page plus links to further pics) that fluorosis is indeed brown patches, not white.

morocco · 13/05/2007 22:22

but the first pic shows white patches?!

christywhisty · 13/05/2007 22:41

son has flourosis. The front teeth have white patches and his adult back teeth came through bad. We only gave him extra flouride on the advice of the dentist

merlotmama · 13/05/2007 23:05

DS1 has this. He is 17 now. We gave him fluoride when he was little, as did many parents at the time. Then by the time DS2 came along 3 years later we were advised by our dentist not to give him fluoride.

Our dentists son - now in his twenties - even has it so she is dead against giving fluoride.

Furball · 14/05/2007 03:23

I have it too on my two front teeth. Mine looks like white horizontal lines

summer111 · 14/05/2007 20:26

beautifulgirls, my post earlier may apply to your dd

Meid · 14/05/2007 22:55

Thank you so much for all the responses, it is really appreciated.

And thank you for the links, Edam.

Although the pictures of flourosis look similar to what my DD has, it does not look quite the same.

I think Summer's description is more what my DD has. It is white patches, all over all the teeth that have come through so far. And the dentist's first thought was a calcium deficiency. I do think my DD gets enough calcium, so it could be something that happened in the womb?

We are off to the GP on Wednesday to see if we can have some blood tests. And my dentist was very nice and said we must get to the bottom of it and if the GP visit didn't amount to anything we were to go back to him.

I'll update this thread if we make progress.

Thanks again.
