What do you know about Tennis Elbow?

I have recently been diagnosed with this after a few months of pain in my right arm. I was prescribed an ibuprofen ointment. It helps a bit, but sometimes the pain is quite severe and goes right to my fingertips.Sad

Is there anything that I can do to get ease/rid of it? If you had it, what helped you. I have a 5mo and so it's not just painful, it's a right pain in the ass.SadAngry

It is a complete PITA. I had steroid injections, a splint, naproxen, and physio, but what got it under control was acupuncture. After that I was really, really careful about how I picked things up, avoided twisting or trailing things behind me (pulling my suitcase is a particular trigger) and if I feel it flaring up I wear the splint, put on the ibuprofen gel and try really hard to avoid things and it settles down again

washewihersen · 10/04/2018 22:44

My DH had it a few years ago at the site of an elbow fracture he suffered as a teenager. Very painful. The GP gave him a few sessions of acupuncture and it totally resolved, my DH was amazed!

LAlady · 10/04/2018 22:46

I had it and was prescribed anti inflammatories. As I seemed to develop it from body pump I had to stop doing that for a while.

It's ok now, thankfully but it was excruciating at the time.

DioneTheDiabolist · 10/04/2018 23:03

Wow CMOTDibbler, that sounds stressful and intense.Flowers Are there any splints you could recommend and do they offer protection? I was playing with DS earlier and he his dummy hit me between the wrist and the thumb. The pain was excruciating.SadAngrySad I don't want to be flinching when I play with my baby.Sad

It's interesting that you and washewihersen report improvements following acupuncture. I'll look into that.

Glad your better LAlady. Gives me hope.Smile How long did it last for?

I'd recommend acupuncture for that type of injury too.
As for splints, I used something like this- www.physioroom.com/product/Mueller_Tennis_Elbow_Brace_with_Gel_Pad/3525/39301.html
It puts pressure on the pain point.

Omg I have this and it's really bloody painful at the moment 😔. Not sure how I originally got mine but it was also aggravated by body pump (which I'm gutted about and now totally lacking in any sort of vague body strength or definition). Will definitely be looking into acupuncture but I've got a query about the split thing - I've got a very similar one with a gel pad but instructions say to wear 4" below the trigger point but this is nearly at my wrist and surely can't be any help there? I really struggle with things like pushing a buggy or trolley round a corner and actually yelped out in pain when small child fell over holding my hand & yanked my arm down & backShock. Physio has given me some exercises which I'm crap at remembering to do and I use cold gel and ice packs when it's really sore.
I've had 2 cortisone injections now and whilst it was a bloody relief to not be in pain and suited at the time due to various events in my life, my elbow now looks hideous and of course it wears off eventually. It's now worse than ever as presumably I've been doing all the wrong things as the pain isn't there but problem hasn't gone away and the doctor refuses to do any more.
You have my sympathies Sad

PRP injections are supposed to have a high chance of working for tennis elbow. I know this because I have had two in my hip for a tendon injuries that won't heal. Too early to tell if they've worked. My insurance won't pay for it, but they would if it was for tennis elbow Hmm

jellyshoeswithdiamonds · 11/04/2018 00:06

Ibruprofen and an ice pack.

DioneTheDiabolist · 11/04/2018 09:42

Flowers to all fellow sufferers.

My GP told me that it could last some time, so do you have any tips on how to cope with it day to day?

Get a splint that goes from knuckles to between wrist & elbow and wear it at night. When your hand relaxes and drops as you sleep, it puts more strain in the injury, the splint supports it & gives it a chance to rest.
I know it sounds hard to believe but it's worth a try, a splint helped me a lot.

Flomper · 11/04/2018 11:46

ive just git rid of this after 6 months of having it. I tried everything but what worked was ibuprofen gel before bed every night an then sleeping with my arm stretched out on a soft pillow, rather than curled up underneath me which was causing the problem.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 11/04/2018 11:48

DH, a very frequent traveller, got this from carrying bags/pulling suitcases. GP warned it could last a couple of years. As it turned out it healed after about twelve months. He had it strapped up for the majority of that time, tried hard not to use it and had a lot of naproxen and gels. Nothing worked until the GP finally decided on the steroid injections, cleared quickly after that.

kissmelittleass · 13/04/2018 06:22

I developed this last summer and it lasted for a few months, at times just picking up a bottle would send me through the roof with pain. I started drinking apple cider vinegar with the mother twice a day in warm water and gradually it lessened and calmed down. Haven't had it since and didn't take anything else for it other than the apple cider vinegar! I can only think it worked!

Rowgtfc72 · 18/04/2018 21:13

Dh has had tennis elbow for quite a few months. He uses his arm for work so can't rest it or take time off. He's spending the day doped up on ibuprofen and cocodamol. Doc tells him it will take time but he's in agony with it.
Had it in the other arm and had steroid injections that didnt work,it went with seven weeks of complete rest.
Any ideas which splints are good? He's tried a few but not successfully.
