Medicated for hypothyroidism, but still showing many symptoms

I have been taking levothryoxine for over 10 years, currently on 150 mg (mcg?) but still have about half the symptoms from the list on the thyroid uk website (tired, overweight, dry eyes etc).

Looking back at my last test results, it appears that the only thyroid test which was done was Serum TSH level which was 3.9 with a healthy range of 0.35 - 5.0. I had asked for a full set of bloods because I was particularly concerned about my weight. My GP specialises in endocrinology. I have an appointment booked for a few weeks time. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I should be asking for?

And re the low tsh, this is often cause for panic and hysteria and reduced dose (expect your gp to want to reduce your dose when they see that) but the more up-to-date thinking is that in the absence of hyper symptoms like palps, diarrhoea, feeling hot and sweaty etc, if t3 is in range tsh can be slightly low.
Op did you take your levo on the day you had your blood test?

ItWillAllBeOkayInTheEnd · 25/06/2018 13:45

Thanks Mrsdewinter, yes I did take my levo on the day I had my blood test. I've also been very careful about taking it before food/tea in the morning, but I really didn't like not having the same dose each day. I'm not at my best at 6 in the morning!
I think my gp will probably just tell me it's the menopause coming, but she seems reasonably willing to be led (she was fairly happy to follow the guidelines in the BMA book I took in with me). I would like to be referred to an endo, is that a reasonable request at this stage? Ideally I'd like my T3 tested, although it might be less effort just to buy a test from medichecks.
I've been out in the sunshine a lot, so I probably do need to take a Vit D supplement - I definitely will come the Autumn, so I might as well start it now.

I found GPs useless with hashimotos, yet to speak to one who understands the basics of it! I ended up paying private to see an endo, worth every penny! I was massively under medicated, which it sounds like you are too. He stated my tsh levels should be

I think my GP will look at my results and say that I'm optimally medicated. I have low TSH and my T4 is in the upper half of the range, which is what we're aiming for, isn't it?
Why do you think this is massively under medicated, Shark?

Is it just the symptoms? The GP could blame those on anything, ie my love of cake. Sad

Because if your tsh is still 3.9, that it high if you're still experiencing symptoms. Mine was still around the 4 Mark and I felt horrendous. My endo increased my dose from 75 to 125 and I feel much better. Not saying this is the case for you but just may be worth looking into. Hope you get sorted, the symptoms are horrendous.

ItWillAllBeOkayInTheEnd · 25/06/2018 14:42

Tsh is 0.03

Apologies! Misread Blush

Op I'm not a doctor (and the doctor would say this doesn't make a difference) but generally it is thought to be better to leave your levo on the day of a test until after the blood draw. If you're taking it in the morning, it kicks in at some stage and your blood is taken soon after, so your t4 can look very high and tsh low.

This would be a good time to take things further. If it's 'just' the menopause ('just' lol) then nothing will change so no harm done.

It is entirely reasonable to ask for a referral but an endo is unlikely to do much for you if you don't see the right one and don't have an agenda, esp if you're going with these bloods.

You need to look at the guidelines re vit d. If your levels are very low a normal supplement won't help much, you need a loading dose.

If I were you I'd get a private test then figure out where to go from there. Pm me if you like, happy to talk you through it.
