Anyone taking Naproxen?

Tansie1 · 06/04/2018 18:36

And do you take it with Omeprazole? And if so, how often do you take that, and when in the day?

I have been prescribed Naproxen gastro-resistant tabs for a crush fracture of a vertebra, but been also given Omeprazole; which, if I'm frank, I'm a bit nervous of taking! The side effects sound a bit heavy-duty.

Any thoughts?

I took both whilst struggling with Sciatica, I had no side effects from either but only took them for a month.
I took the Omeprazole once a day, I don’t remember having to take it at a certain time.

SilverHairedCat · 06/04/2018 20:32

Yes. Take the omeprazole. Had zero side effects from it, but DH ended up with an endoscopy for potential stomach ulcers after taking naproxen without the omeprazole.

Jon66 · 06/04/2018 20:32

Omeprazole once a day, doesn't matter when but should take each tablet 24 hours apart.

ZenNudist · 06/04/2018 20:32

Just take the Omeprazole once a day. Its a very easy medicine to take. I take naproxen/ ibuprofen once a day. On a full stomach. I Try and get by without it (prolapsed discs).

Yes you need it to protect your tummy.

HeadingForSunshine · 06/04/2018 20:42

Yes take it, it protects your tummy. I have had the same injury. I found the naproxen more effective than 30/500 cocodamol. Be sure to eat a liitle with these meds.

Two years plus op and I'm fine. I was very scared and the pain was excruciating. Look after yoursrlf, take baby steps and let time take its course.

I found specialist physio led pilates very helpful.

CaviarAndCigarettes · 06/04/2018 21:06

Not with omeprazole but hubs has. He didn't die.
I had my first naproxen a few weeks ago due to an almighty tooth ache and it was amazing! I rarely take painkillers (maybe once every 3/4 years) as I dislike taking medication but it was brill. Took the toothache away and back ache that I've had for so long I didn't notice it till it was gone!

blinkineckmum · 08/04/2018 10:12

I had to stop as it gave me diarrhoea.

QuiteCleanBandit · 08/04/2018 10:14

Yep raging diarrhoea for me -couldnt leave the bathroom.
Its the magnesium in it, apparently 3% get diarrhoea Confused

JustRosieHere · 08/04/2018 10:15

I was prescibed it without omeprazole and ended up with the most horrendous heartburn. I then had to take omeprazole for months after, slowly weaning off it as the heart burn and acid reflux persisted after I stopped the naproxen. The only side effect I had from omeprazole was it made me quite regular. I’d go to the toilet half an hour after taking it without fail

AstrantiaMajor · 08/04/2018 10:21

I take it with the first Naproxen of the day. No side effect for me.

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 08/04/2018 10:29

I take one Omeprazole in the morning, and then one 250mg Naproxen with breakfast and one at tea time. Sciatic nerve compression. The Naproxen is a wonder and really helps but it knocked me absolutely sick when I tried taking it without the stomach protection. Bit upset that my GP left me to go without it until I had to ask, and even then it was a good while later - when I said that Diazepam wasn't relieving the pain as much and I was tempted to just endure the nausea and take Naproxen anyway - that he suggested Omeprazole. It appears that, as I had researched, it is common for it to be prescribed with an anti sickness medicine.

Aside from that!: Omeprazole works wonders for taking away the nausea (although I still felt unwell when I bumped up to a double dose of Naproxen), Naproxen works wonders as an anti inflammatory. I do feel bloated and heavy because of it, and visits to the loo are less easy for me, but I tried giving the duo a break for a few days to check if it was definitely the medication and my back and legs hurt - a lot! So it's a price to pay that I'll accept.

blueskypink · 08/04/2018 10:36

I took both medications a few years ago. I didn't associate the low level stomach ache which developed with the Omeprazole. When I stopped the medication the stomach ache stopped too, but when I started the Omeprazole again it came back. The Naproxen didn't work for me (though obviously I may have been in much more discomfort without it).

Aragog · 08/04/2018 10:38

I take Omeproxole. Have done for several years now, one a day. I take alongside a range of other medication for arthritis. I'm not currently taking Naproxen as I have Diclofenic and Cocodomal as my pain meds at the moment.
I've never had any issues with the Omepraxole. And I have to admit I'm not religious about taking it at the same time every day etc. I do notice when I haven't taken it though!

Onynx · 08/04/2018 11:02

I'm on I'm omeprazole for life and I really notice when I haven't taken it. I take Naproxen for a back injury but try to avoid it if I can as I find it makes me quite tired (it's also used to treat Migraine). I think for me nurofen plus works slightly better though.

Tansie1 · 08/04/2018 11:56

Thanks everyone. I am having to come to terms with the fact I may be on pain meds for the rest of my life, so I guess I've been trying to avoid either of the drugs; however, I can't actually do my back physio without pain relief so I am thinking it's time to just take them.

As well as the Naproxen I use Voltorol 12 hour relief. I rub it I just before bed time, otherwise I wake about 4 with intense pain.

blueskyinmarch · 08/04/2018 13:14

I take Naproxen as and when i need it. I wasn't prescribed Omeprazole with it and i don't always take it with food. I have never had any issues at all with it.

QuiteCleanBandit · 08/04/2018 13:25

I have a condition that flares,I take Naproxen as a 4 week course when this happens and then I can take it occasionally.

Tansie1 · 09/04/2018 12:56

OK, I'm going in.

Just taken my first ever dose of Omeprazole, am heating up my lunch, then, after that, (drum roll....) the Naproxen.

I need to be able to move to do my physio! I am on A/L this week and will easily lie in bed til noon as lying still, in the right position, I am pain-free. However, unless I insist my DH pushes me around in a bath chair for the rest of my days, I have to get on top of this!

I took 500mg of Naproxen for years without omeprazole, but wouldn't recommend doing it that way. I now take Indometacin daily which is much stronger than Naproxen and can't do it without the omeprazole.

Advice I've had from doctors has actually varied - with the indometacin I've been told to take them at the same time. However, if you find that you actually suffer a bit from acid problems, say when you eat spicy food or fruit, then it may be better to take the omeprazole at night. I've never had any side effects from the omeprazole, not taking it has been far worse, the gastric side effects of the indometacin are horrible.

Tansie1 · 10/04/2018 17:18

Thanks. I noticed this morning when I ate breakfast then took my Naproxen, my stomach was quite gurgly. I also got a mild wave of nausea, but that passed. I took the Omeprazole just before lunch, and a second dose of Naproxen after eating, still a bit 'noisy' but not painful!

I think I will move my Omeprazole dose to the evening, like you suggest.
