Gallbladder removal

Hi all,

Due to have my gallbladder removed on 9th April ... now absolutely bricking it as I've never had a general or had to recover from an op before.

Am really hoping it gets cancelled although I know that's just my nerves but I am at that point of trying to think of every reason under the sun to not have it done, scared the death of what happens before, during and after ... I've been told I will be staying in for one night minimum.

Any good hints, tips and a good idiot guide of what to expect for the whole thing? Have to arrive for 7:30 Monday am, luckily kids are organised for grandparents and dog going to a friends house for a week, hubby wfh mon & tues.

I guess I'll be on here in the middle of the nights too (asking for best drugs to have)

Eeeeeeek Sad

I was one of the unlucky few percent to have unexpected open surgery rather than keyhole. Something to be aware of as recovery is a lot longer. Luckily I took extra in my 'overnight' bag just in case!

4 new books ordered, got peppermint tea already, orders the cherry tart stuff and some arnica tablets.

Have already had it noted my mum is always v unwell after a GA but will make sure I mention anti sickness. Now noted for gas too, although when I earned DH he just rolled his eyes and said "no change there then".

I'm full of cold at the mo so hoping to get rid of it completely over the weekend, could do without having to cough next week!

Neighbour home Weds & Thursday for emergencies and if it's really bad I can always call my mum to come over.

I had mine removed after having a severely infected gallbladder. It had fused itself to both my liver and my bowel, according to the surgeon, which made it more complicated to remove. When I first came round, I had nausea and pain, which was immediately sorted with medication. I had to stay overnight because they had inserted a drain but about 3/4 hours after the surgery I no longer needed pain relief. The only side effect that I have suffered is heartburn, which my go has sorted with medication. It’s a simple procedure and you’ll feel so much better for having it done. I suggest that you discuss your concerns with the surgeon and anaesthetist on the day of your surgery. I can honestly tell you though that it’s not as scary as it seems and the surgeons do these ops frequently.

Having your gallbladder removed is a piece of piss. Honestly, having a filling at the dentist is worse.

chaplin1409 · 06/04/2018 23:25

I had mine out in November and like the others have said it took a while to get better. I was definitely worn out for the first week and started doing more the 2nd week after. The one thing is make sure you have nighties to wear afterwards as I found all my Pj trousers sat right by my wounds.

Elementtree · 10/04/2018 17:32

How are you doing another? Hope everything went well and you aren't in too much pain.

anothernextsale · 11/04/2018 05:49

I'm home .... pain is bearable but needing to take tablets regularly to keep on top of it. I'm uncomfortable when trying to get to sleep but I'm managing a 2-3 hrs at a time.

I spent yesterday in bed, had 2 small walks round the house and a 3 hour sleep in the afternoon and managed to eat small and often. Woke at 4 for tablets, visit to loo but I'm now wide awake hurting again and not able to get comfy in bed. Hoping I doze off soon

Hopefully this shitty bit will be over quickly and that you manage to get some rest soon.

Snoopyokay · 12/04/2018 22:23

Hope you feel better soon I remember it hurting a lot to get comfortable in bed and once you found a comfortable position you were kind of stuck!

Hi there

How are you since your surgery? I hope you are well on the road to recovery.

Elementtree · 02/05/2018 16:22

I had my gallbladder out yesterday.

Honestly, having a filling at the dentist is worse.

On the off chance that you read your old posts, I suggest you change your dentist mimpie.

Hi all,

I'm into week 3 now and have mostly recovered from the op. However, I have had an allergic reaction to something used during the operation so not out of the woods yet and was seen again 3 times this week alone. Still not back at work.

Week one was the hardest, codeine made me very fuzzy too (although did also help a lot with the pain) so stopped after ten days and now just taking paracetamol when needed

Most comfiest thing I've found to wear is a pair of joggers from Hush ... did cost £49 but the waistband doesn't hurt at all Smile

Oh no, it sounds like you've been through the mill. Glad to hear you are doing better now.

I had to stay in overnight but I'm ok. I'm hobbling around like an extra on walking dead at the moment but I think I'd be at least 20% happier if the sennacot would take effect Grin

user1483451142 · 04/05/2018 22:25

I found Ducolax liquid worked very well. Would you consider using that?

Elementtree · 04/05/2018 22:40

Yeah, I would and will if things haven't improved by tomorrow. Opiates and laxatives - it's not quite as glam as the models make it look.

anothernextsale · 10/05/2018 07:35

Hope you're OK Elementree, the first week is the hardest but you need to rest up as much as possible.

Elementtree · 10/05/2018 08:30

I'm a lot better thanks. I can move around a lot more and only uncomfortable rather than in pain and the duxolac did the trick, thanks for that. I think I've been one of the lucky one because I can eat without any issues. The tiredness is something else though - I have a nana nap every few hours!

How are you doing now? It must be hugely frustrating to be recovering from the removal and also complications from the surgery at the same time Flowers

anothernextsale · 10/05/2018 23:34

I found I only wanted to eat small meals to start with but have had no problems with anything I've eaten so far, even a curry takeaway! I've not really had much alcohol yet, had a couple of glasses of pimms the weekend and was fine too.

Have dermatologist appointment tomorrow, I'm not convinced I'll ever find out what has caused the reaction but after watching some doctor program last night I'm counting myself lucky it is only on my stomach area and the op wasn't on my bum Smile or worse Grin. It's been very frustrating and yes yes yes to the tiredness.... I then realised the codeine was also knocking me out, even on just 2 a day (was prescribed up to 6 a day!!) even though I did need an afternoon nap yesterday but I'd not had a good nights sleep.
