Piles

I'm rather embarrassed about posting this and was kinda hoping someone else might bring this topic up but I've suffered too long.
I've never had piles before DS and only got one after the birth. Since then I get them everytime I have my period. I use the cream but this is obviously just to ease the discomfort.
What I'm worried about is that if we have another baby these things are going to get a lot worse - plus I've heard horror stories about them bursting when in labour
Is anyone else brave enough to admit they're suffering and what can be done about them.

Hi Wellsie. I too am a fellow sufferer! I first got them after ds, and occassionally they keep popping back. But the cream does the trick for me every time.

Maybe you need to be using a pessary?

tinytoes · 05/08/2004 14:10

this is even more awful than your post-brace yourself-
my mums tip was to grease them up with vaseline and tuck them back inside while in the bathsounds horrible i know but after a few tries mine disappeared without trace...

wellsie · 05/08/2004 14:16

Cringed but LOL at the same time Tinytoes. Have either of you had probs during labour with them? Sorry to be personal - you don't have to respond.

I have had them but not very badly.first time i suffered was bc i got them when i sat on a damp wall an bonfire night(the old wives tail is true)
then i have had them(at points) in my pregnancies but the have got better first on there own and then with my mums loverly tip lol! thanks mum!
hope they get better wellsie welldone for being brave enough to post about them!!!

gloworm · 05/08/2004 19:45

i too have suffered recently, have had them for a few months but have only just got around to treating them. I used Bioforce Aesculus Forte tablets (high strength horse chestnut). you take them twice a day. within 2 days there was a vast improvement and its now been a week and they have almost completly disappeared

constipation can make them worse so drink plenty of water etc

take fish oil everyday, it lubricates and makes poo easier to pass. this will give piles a chance to recover and can help prevent them coming back again. sorry its imposible to have this conversation without being graphic

I had them really badly when pg with DS2 - the GP gave me Proctosydal (I think that's what it's called!) and it really helped. I think it has to be prescribed. Good luck - they're awful aren't they? Wouldn't wish them on anyone!

tex111 · 05/08/2004 22:29

Wellsie, I was so glad to see your post as I wanted to ask a similiar question!
I got them while pg with DS and they've never gone away (2 years). It seems mine are quite bad though and I will have to have an op once I've had all my babies.

I'm concerned about having another baby too and the effect it could have on them. My only suggestion is to do everything you can to treat them so that they don't get worse. My doc told me that once they get to a certain point the skin has stretched so much that it forms a little sac that is impossible to get rid of without surgery. Horrible!!

Best of luck to you. Don't hesitate to speak to your doc if you're not getting results with over the counter meds. Good luck!!

Do a search for previous threads on this subject, there have been several and I'm sure you'll get lots of useful info from them. What cream are you using ATM? Of the over-the-counter ones I find germoloids is quite good. Proctofoam is highly rated but you need to get a prescription. As gloworm says, try to avoid constipation - do you get constipated just before a period? (it can be hormonal). If so, and you can't overcome it by diet and drinking lots, my advice is to use something like fybogel or lactulose for a few days to make sure everything keeps moving!

I have had piles since my early 20's and they got substantially worse after my first pregnancy and unbearable during and after my 2nd. I have been to specialists both here and in the usa and all have agreed that they are NOT operable because they are the external kind. Basically the only thing that works for immediate relief is Proctofoam. You need to get it prescribed, but do not accept any substitutes. It really is the only thing that works. Also, my research seems to indicate that pelvic floor muscle exercises can also help reduce or prevent piles.

TracyK · 08/08/2004 14:47

I'm afraid I am a fellow sufferer after my ds birth. I think I have an external one - which I don't think the creams can help with.
Do you think the vaseline trick works with the external ones?
I know it is a weak pelvic floor that is to blame too - but I'm rubbish at my exercises.
I have read on the internet you can get the external ones removed with a rubber band!! under docs instructions of course.

So glad to see this thread as I was thinking about it myself. I am really suffering at the moment and of course the heat isn't helping. Nothing I've tried has worked and I think I'm going to have to face the embarassment of going to the doctors. Everytime I go to the toilet it bleeds and continues afterwards for an hour or so. I can't really tell if it's an external one or not but obviously there is plenty there to see. Any quick solutions would be very much appreciated.

wellsie · 11/08/2004 21:25

TracyK, the rubberband trick seems gruesome to me. Flip, I know what you mean. I'm thinking I'm going to have to go to the doc's about this but I'm really embarrased. Can't understand why when every Tom, Dick and Harry have seen my nether regions due to birth of DS. Oh, well I'll see how it goes during next period and then I might bite the bullet.

I got them when I was pregnant with dd and then with ds much worse suring pregnancy. My doctor would not prescribe but told me to eat bran. I thought she was mad but within 2 days pain had gone and now I eat 2-3 tablespoons everyday with my cereal. If I don't the pain returns......

sportyspice · 14/08/2004 21:06

Flip - quick cure is to sit on a bag of peas or something frozen to reduce the swelling and relieve the pain. It was a doctor that told me to do that and it works to help shrink their size to then treat them with creams etc - might want to do this one whilst on your own plus make sure you use something cheap to bin as opposed to a nice bit of frozen salmon!
