Any ideas on this sore on my dad's leg?

My dad has had a sore on his leg that is causing him some pain. He has had it for 3 weeks. He is type 2 diabetic with a complicated medical history (has had 2 strokes, had a aortic annuurism and is on lots of meds). He is 89 and his GP isn't interested and brushed him off when he mentioned the sore.

Any ideas what it may be? We thought an ulcer? There is swelling around the sore and the surrounding skin is warm to touch. Should we put some sort of cream on it? Just a bit worried that it may turn nasty due to the diabetes.

TIA

Looks like an ulcer to me. My DH is type II diabetic and has had a few ulcers which took quite a long time to heal. He really should see the nurse at his practice to start the dressings and to check if its an ulcer. Any chance of an appointment tomorrow? If you mention possible leg ulcer, and your dad's age, they maybe will see him soon. Not very impressed with his GP. Even if its not an ulcer with all we hear re sepsis/infections he could have suggested something just as a precaution. Your poor dad.
Good luck.

Did your GP realise he meant there was a sore and not the leg was sore. IYSWIM. I too would want this seen ASAP with the background of diabetes. Hope he feels better soon.

I'd try and get him in to the practice nurse asap. They are a lot more on the ball about skin issues in the elderly ime, and it's vital to get on top of things fast as even a small sore can break down quickly and then be a beggar to heal

It looks like he's knocked his ankle on something and due to the diabetes, it's taking a while to heal. Definitely worth making an appointment with Practice Nurse. They'll be very experienced. I wouldn't put on any creams or anything.

Thanks for the replies. I will see if he can get an appointment with the nurse. Apparently, it is very painful especially when he lies down. My dad had Sepsis 2 years ago but don't think his body could cope with it nowadays.

yes to wound nurse/practice nurse.
and also podiatry, so that his feet/ankles are in best possible condition which is very important with diabetes in elderly patients.
