Worrying smear test

I recently had a smear test and it was painful. The nurse said I had a polyp and that caused the pain. She said that she was referring me straight to colposcopy for suspicious cervix. I have had lettz and laser treatment for cin 3 in the past. I used to get yearly smears but then moved to three years this time as they were normal for a good few years. I am bleeding and cramping six days after this smear test. I have been having intermittent bleeding for a small while and pelvic pain. Anyone have experience with this? Everything I google says cancer. Could this just be an infection? Nurse said I’ll be waiting 4 weeks for results and maybe week after that colposcopy will be incontact with me for an app. Seems a long way off right now. TIA

I think it's pretty poor for a nurse to put this fear into you- she's a nurse, not a consultant gynaecologist. She is not an expert.

Polyps on the cervix are very common. If they get knocked ( as in sex or during a smear) they can bleed. They have nothing to do with cancer 99.9% of the time.

If she was REALLY worried she ought to have referred you to your GP who would then fast track you to a consultant in 2 weeks.

You can always book an appt with your GP to talk this over with . It's really bad behaviour on the nurse's part to say your cervix looked suspicious then leave you to wait up to 5 weeks for an appt.

Make an appt with your GP and ask for more information. As I said if they are really worried you will be referred to a consultant quickly.

I'm sorry for the worry but I just had my smear and it was the most painful one I had and I did bleed a lot after it over the course of a good 5 days. I was convienced it was going to be a bad result as I never in my life bled after a smear but no all was grand tg but just to let you know that's it's normal to bleed after it and it doesn't mean anything bad.

What she has said sounds confusing. Has she referred you, or is she saying she has done a smear, and thinks you are likely to be called in for a colposcopy after? "Results within four weeks, then called in for colposcopy in a week" sounds like (almost) the routine way it works anyway, so she hasnt actually done anything about her concern???

FWIW (you are probably aware of this as you previously had treatment), I had a smear recently. My results came back abnormal- they were back after exactly 2 weeks and the letter stated I should expect a letter about a colposcopy within 2 weeks. I got it a week or so later, for the next week
From smear to colposcopy was about 4 weeks total. From reading on lots of forums, etc, it sounds like abnormal results are put through quicker, so hopefully you wont be waiting 5 weeks to even have contact re colpsocopy.

I second making an appointment with your GP. Ask what she meant, and if you have or have not been "referred". The point of referring you is to rush through, surely, so why would she also say it might take longer than the average process for an abnormal smear (I understand some places do take longer if they are running a back log).

I wouldn't read into the bleeding too much. Of course it can be a cancer symptom, but if you have a polyp, it is also a symptom of that. Try and talk yourself down a bit until your smear results come through.

Thanks everyone for the reply’s. I’ve taken your advice and made an appointment with doc.
