Mellowma, could be muscle strain.

I had very similar symptoms after I had painted the bathroom ceiling and was constantly supporting myself against the wall with my left hand.

You've just moved haven't you? Or about to move? It could be a result of lifting/moving things. Can you lift your arm properly?

Dr may prescribe some anti-inflammatory medication.

I have every sympathy as I've currently got a sore shoulder thats spread to my neck (I think holding my shoulder tense made my neck hurt IYSWIM ) -I've no idea how I got it and, like you, put it down to sleeping awkwardly.

Could yours be a frozen shoulder? I'm not exactly sure what it is but someone at my pilates class last night was complaining of this. She apparently gets it every now and again.

Frozen Shoulder -here you go.

I would suggest seeing an osteopath. I had what I initially thought was a pulled muscle in my upper arm and the GP agreed, but on getting no better I went to an osteopath who after a couple of weeks diagnosed it as frozen shoulder. This goes on for months if not years and doesn't just come and go. With a combination of osteopath (on NHS after a while) and Alexander Technique (great but not on NHS) I am getting back to normal after about 9 months. It feels as if my upper arm and neck are strained but actually it's referred pain and the shoulder capsule has contracted.

A trapped nerve in your neck could cause those symptoms - the nerve pain travels down the arm.
