There is a lot of conflicting advice. The established/cautious view is that you should wait until all the spots have scabbed over, but some authorities now say that the child stops being infectious 5 days after the spots appear.

I think 5 days is the minimum.

sorkycake · 09/05/2007 23:16

It's about 2 weeks incubation, then spots for about a week, ok when scabs fall off or crust over or something like that, but then your other kids will get it too. All in all, we avoided playgroups etc for a month whilst it danced it's way through our house.

yes melpomene there are lots of diff views.
so really i should wait til sat for her to go anywhere.
took her to my local veg shop - i checked n o customers before i wnet in - and woman behind counter told me she shouldnt be out.
but i'd no one to mind her or ds.

H, it can be up to 3 weeks incubation period for your other child to come down with it. Incubation is usually 7-21 days, although a lot fall with it at 14 days. But my friends has 4 kids, and there has been 3 weeks (give or take a day) between each of them coming down with it. She says she is going mad...don't blame her. Mine have avoided it so far

sorkycake · 10/05/2007 08:34

Oh bless! When ds got them after dd his were worse, hope your holiday goes ok

Janbo25 · 10/05/2007 15:59

I think my ds is just starting with chicken pox to, came home from nursery yesterday with 5 spots on his face now as approx 14 but just on his face, how is it likely to progress?

binkleandflip · 10/05/2007 16:01

All I can tell you is that it took three weeks after my dd's spots crusted over for me to starting feeling peaky then sprout them - my first ever chicken pox at 33 - twas not pretty.

mosschops30 · 10/05/2007 16:08

aw hermy i really feel for you ds got chickenpox but he coped very well with them, I was praying dd would come down with it soon after as she was going to disneyland.

No such luck, just over 3 weeks later, dd gets her first spot and ends up having a miserable time.

The doctor said she was not fit to travel until all the spots scabbed over (which took about 7 days altogether) and she didnt go to disney

Good luck I will keep my fingers crossed. But please dont take any risks when you go on hols, you dont know who you might be putting at risk on your flight etc

hermykne · 10/05/2007 21:54

mosschops, we've 18 days to departure, its getting pretty likely that if he gets them it will be just at that time, so we will postpone.
