Anyone else experiencing much more painful periods since having a baby?

From chatting to other mums it seems that many of us have heavier periods now, but mine are becoming more and more painful each month.

The pain starts on about day 2, and last quite a few days after I've finished.

They're so painful I'm taking paracetamol and ibuprofin at the same time, with little effect. I've tried feminex (?) and that works for a while but soon wears off.

It's general period pain, complete with aching thighs, but also cramps all over my tummy, and very high up under my ribs now as well

Is this normal? Ds is 20 months.

Hijack, pix, how are you, how far now hun?

Yes, mine have been very very painful. I was also shocked at the amount of loss recently. I have only had 2 since dd birth.

I have just ordered a mooncup which arrived today, but am thinking I need to use a mug instead

bodiddly · 09/05/2007 21:07

Mine are the same and def a lot heavier!

isaidno · 09/05/2007 21:12

Before children I never ever had a period pain, but now my periods are heavier and more painful.

This could also be attributed to the fact I spent years on the pill though - I'm getting "real" ones now!

hermykne · 09/05/2007 21:17

you should check it with yourdoctor
as i have had this since ds was born and i finshed breastfeeding 2 yrs ago. and my doc said the balance of hormones is easily all wrong and can be rectified to have a "normal"period again (no massive clot like discharge, severe cramping that happens very quickly, periods that drag on longer than 5 days or very feint discharge for up to 10 days and in my case pmt like i never ever ever had before) . my docotor took blood tests 2 weeks ago and i'll have the results with her course of action tomorrow or friday.

thyroid levels can also affect periods via the brain - it was all technical stuff.

me too.......and yes to pain higher up. i need to sit down at regular intervals too, because my fanny aches if i've been stood or walking for a long time......

DontlookatmeImanervouswreck · 09/05/2007 21:25

Mine are alot heavier but strangely (and thankfully) not as painful.

Agree it might be worth checking out at the doctors though.

lol ucm I know what you mean!!

Think I'll mention it next time I'm at the drs. If only to get some stronger pain relief.

QR - Yes, that awful ache, to go alongside that pain

Someone made me laugh with the "fanny ache" how very well put together!

treacletart · 10/05/2007 20:34

Poor you - sounds horid. It seems clear motherhood can change them in many ways. I used to suffer horribly with painful periods - since having DS they're frightningly heavy but almost pain free. Feminax and those strange sticky heat pads used to help me. Also have you considered acupuncture?

apeainapod · 10/05/2007 20:40

Sorry but yes.... before the first I would be like the girl in the old ST ads - roller skating along the promenade not a care in the world. NOW you'll find me crouching on the sofa demanding everything from hot waterbottles to another bottle of wine to 'make the pain go away'. Also excrutiating stabbing pains in the general area which can actually make me stop in my traks because I can't even breathe it hurts so much.

Thanks for the thread - it didn't even ocur to me until I read the OP.
