I think I already know what the answer to this will be but anyway...

Ds is 20mths and his legs are covered in big purply red bruises. I know it's normal for them to get bruises especially on their legs but, these are really big and never seem to dissapear.

From what you are posting, I guess there's no obvious cause, like rough and tumble play?
Some people do just bruise more easily. Boring but true, if you are concerned, see the doc (and I know you are probably fed up with that sort of advice ? how's dd?). Weren't you concerned that dd could be anaemic? Maybe I'm being daft here, but if ds was anaemic, could that cause excessive bruising, ie lack of iron interfering with normal clotting (but probably stupid of me, not sure low levels of iron would intefere with white blood cell count?).

Does he ride a trike? Or ride a tractor type toy? May keep banging his legs, hence the bruises.

nutcracker · 04/08/2004 22:57

edam - I doubt very much that Ds is aneliac as he eats realy well usually. It did cross my mind though.

Mears - He can't ride a trike so it's not that. He does like to climb on the table and chairs, and isn't afraid of getting down however he can so I suppose it could be that.

It's just that they are so big and dark, and never seem to fade and go yellow. Or they are but more are appearing so i don't notice the others fading.

When I saw you'd started this thread, nutcracker, I panicked for a sec thinking you were having yet MORE worries with dd. Like edam, I hope she's doing OK.

I think the bruising is probably normal, but as they're so big and don't change color, I know that I would want the reassurance of seeing the gp. There could be weird stuff going on with his clotting, blood counts that could account for it but I'd HIGHLY doubt they'll find anything abnormal or even order a blood test. GP will probably send you straight home after a glance. But I'm one of those people who needs reassurance so I would probably get a medical opinion. . .but I'm not saying that's the right thing to do.

Thanks for rembering Dd. She is doing o.k, still quite lethargic at times, so i am going to go ahead with another blood test when she has her appointment at the end of august.
Decided not to stress anymore about the absences, and just wait and see if i spot them or if her teacher in reception does.

I think with Ds i may try and make a rough diagram of where the bruisews are and how big they are, and then i should be able to see if they are going. They seem to be a pretty permanant feature at the mo, but then he is more active now we have the garden.
Dd's always had bruise covered legs too, but never this big or red.

Could it be Erythema Nodosum? That can present as bruising on the legs. There's something about it here and I think there was a thread recently. I had it years ago, it wasn't serious and didn't really bother me so don't worry too much if you think it might be that!

nutcracker · 04/08/2004 23:51

Erm just had a quick look Cd and i don' thinkit's that. The bruises are really quite large, and red/purple.

If i can i'll take a piccie tommorow.

Right i've checked his legs again and he has about 3 biggish bruises and one little one on his one leg. About 10p and 5p in size.
They are dark purple in colour.

They don't seem as bad today, and apparently it seems that bruises can take quite a few weeks to dissapear completely, so i think he is just getting some before others dissapear and it's making it look worse.

Thanks for the help all

fwiw nutty, I get a lot of bruises on my legs that I could not think of a reason for. I went to the doctor in the end, just in case. She came up with a rational explanation (bumping into desks at work). I now realise that my leg probably does make contact with desks from time to time, but not so I'd notice or so it hurts, I just get a lot of bruises. If I sit cross legged and rest my chin on my hand and my elbow on my leg I get a massive deep purple bruise - just from that. The doctor said it was nothing to worry about. However, with someone that small I would get it checked out - I'm glad I did, it put my mind at rest.

gloworm · 05/08/2004 10:52

when our ds was learning to climb up on chairs his shins were covered in big bruises all the time. it seemed to last for a couple of munths as far as i can remember. the bruises stopped, i think, when he was big enough to get up on the chair without quite so much clamboring (is that even a word??)

Another cause of bruising is lack of iron and lack of Vitamin C.

My DD (2y4m) is covered in bruises - mainly her legs. Although these do go black and yellowish - so long as there isn't anothe rone on top before it has chance. DD is just always in the wars and she seems to bruise really easily. She currently has little bruises down her spine - I can only imagine they came from going on the little roller coaster at Legoland on Friday?

Since using arnica cream (thank you Mumsnetters for recommending it) on them every time I noticed her knocking herself they do seem to be improving at times.

I just forgot the arnica for Legoland, hence this batch.
