Ug.
I had it as an adult adn so has DS. Scrpiously clean - separate towels, flannels etc v. contagious.

Poor little mite - hope he is not too bad.

McDreamy · 09/05/2007 19:03

aawww poor him - have you got some cream? Or is he on antibiotics.? Poor little man!

McDreamy · 09/05/2007 19:04

I had it a few weeks ago on my knee!

hayes · 09/05/2007 19:04

my little cousin had this it was such a shame, her face was quite bad too, but touch wood she has only suffered from it that one time. Hope he gets better soon, did he get some ointment?

beckybrastraps · 09/05/2007 19:04

Oh God. My two had this last summer and it was a pig to shift.

Hope it clears up soon.

MaureenMLove · 09/05/2007 19:06

Ah, poor love. Have you got antibios for him? My dd suffers badly with coldsores. Its only triggered when she gets a cold or is run down, so we can usually gage when she's gonna get one. Had a cold last week, so has a huge one on her lip and under her nose. Hopefully, it won't get any worse this time, but she's had impetigo from them before. Hope he gets better soon.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 09/05/2007 19:07

He's got antibiotics, cream for his face, and ointment for up his nose.

He'd seen the nurse briefly when I went last week about my tonsilitis - she said it was a viral thing.

His nose is literally clogged with blood and mucuous. He's having nosebleeds every few hours. Its really infected up his nose.

Try using some kind of tea tree oil in bath aswell.
Also, as soon as possible, try and get the antibiotic cream under the scab, iyswim. Obv you don't wnat to puu the scab off and make it bleed, but once the cream starts to dry it out you may be able to do this.
These two things really helped in getting rid of DS's impetigo a few months.
He then had a mild allergic reaction to the oral antibiotics he had been described, but that is another story!

dinny · 09/05/2007 19:22

exactly snap with my ds, VVV - he's gettign so upset not being able to breathe through his nose

he's day two of oral antibiotics and seems bit better today. interesting nurse said it was viral....

carol3 · 09/05/2007 19:28

I have it too, its awful on my second lot of antibiotics now, its so sore

Wimmilymorris · 09/05/2007 19:47

Sorry for your ds. Impetigo is really grim!

Scratching can be a real problem(the sticky stuff in the spots/sores gets under the fingernails). The practice nurse at our surgery told me to keep dc's fingernails really short, wash their hands with an antibacterial soap (Cidal is good) and to use a nail brush. Also, to wash their towels/bed sheets etc separately in v. hot water. As NoodleStroodle says - v.contagious.

hope he gets better soon.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 09/05/2007 22:05

Well, yes dinny - it looks no different now than it did a week ago - except his nose looks worse.

Thanks for all your advice. Its not something I know much about.

aaah your poor DS

my DS had impetigo 3 times 2 yrs ago - he & his sister got it on holiday in France, and then he got it twice more when we got home

my DS likes scrabbling in the dirt though

I would say regarding the contagious comment that we were on holiday with my brothers family at the time & we bathed all 4 kids together until we realised it wasnt mosquito bites
my nephew & niece did not get impetigo

VeniVidiVickiQV · 09/05/2007 22:21

Well, I appear to have it - under my armpit. DP thinks he has it, but he's a woossy

DD who baths with DS and has eczma etc hasnt got it.

I suspect he may have picked it up from our regular swimming trips.

Although he was smothered on saturday and we went swimming.......

But, the nurse had told me it was viral!!!!

What the he** is the nurse talking about viral, impetigo is caused by Staph. aureus a bacteria which many people carry normally on their skin just sometimes breaks through (aureus means gold in latin or greek or something hence the gold (yellow for the unimaginative) crust on impetigo scabs and as it is bacterial will respond to the cream and antibiotics

Heard of some gp's misdiagnosing as measles and eczema.

TMMJ - Now we know, it'll be showers for both of them! But, this time last week we were proceeding under the misapprehension (from the nurse at the GPs) that it was a viral rash due to DS 'possibly' having tonsilitis like me. Hence bathing together, going swimming, visiting folk......

OP posts:
dinny · 10/05/2007 12:16

my Gp said it was (these days) secondary to an infection like a virus etc (my ds had a yummy bug and cold the week before).

he has huge scabs up his nose that are making him SO blocked up but he won't let me get them out - any ideas? will they just go???

Youch!!!!! that looks really sore TMMJ!!!

I think that is what DS has up his nose. DD's eczma is under control atm so I think she'll be okay.

Dinny - we have found getting DS in the bath and playing lots of splashing games gets it wet and the crust dissolves or comes away. We have a noddy and a pooh bear wash mitts too which help.

What we also did at the weekend (before we knew it was impetigo) was to get saline solution and the cotton buds with the large bit that stop you from sticking it too far up/in, and whilst he was asleep on my lap (an unusual occurence, admittedly) gently soak the area with the wet cotton bud, and gently twirl the bud around from time to time.

I'm really sorry. It is a right old PITA to shift - takes ages. It will go, though, I promise. Can he go to school (sorry, perhaps he's not of school age?!)? I ask, because DD1 was not allowed at school until all the scabs had gone (took almost 3 weeks). The doctor insisted that there was no reason not to send her, but the school was adamant. Then, of course, I got a letter from the council saying she'd missed too much school ... numpties.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 10/05/2007 13:32

GG - he is too young atm - he is two. I mentioned to DD's pre-school and they werent fussed - she doesnt appear to have it after all.

I was hoping my work might send me home until it was clear but no such luck

It is looking better already today. We are having a battle getting the nose ointment up, but, I think we may wait until he is asleep tonight to do it. I think the antibiotics are doing a sterling job.
