Post root canal hell

In desperation, has anyone had pain after a root canal that had a happy ending? It's been 7 weeks and my tooth (back molar) is still painful.

Endo specialist is saying it's not his work so must be a micro crack in the tooth so extraction only likely outcome. He's filed the bite down a couple of times which hasn't helped. I can't really chew on that side and brushing is eeek.

It's cost me ££££ and I'm going slightly mad.

Help!

took 3 months for mine to stop hurting - couldn't bite on solid food (front tooth) but brushing was ok. Lost about 15kg...so I guess it wasn't all bad! Hope you're improves soon.

I have an extra canal in my teeth. It meant there was still nerve in after my root canal treatment. It took 18 months of hell until I sat under a microscope, they removed the filling and they found it.

Knowing I had this, my mum asked, and she has extra canals too, so it's genetic.

Ask them to take a closer look.

I just got a copy of the letter he wrote to my dentist, not all the nerve was removed it seems as it was calcified but still calls it a successful treatment?

Mine took a good few months. When applying makeup pressing a certain point on my face would make me get tingling shooting pains! It's totally better now.

Agh, so hard to know what to do! I can't bear this pain (not severe but always there) for more months! But losing tooth if I don't have to also not great

Could you see a different dentist? I've just gone to a new guy who was excellent and does microscopic work. I had to have two sessions and it was £££ but he's excellent. I have crossed over roots so difficult job (and need the other side doing too). Whereabouts are you?

davidbyrneswhitesuit · 28/03/2018 19:00

I had this - I think dentist slightly overfilled past apex or something (it's a decade ago now). I had several sessions with some specialist off Harley Street, costing hundreds of pounds, but eventually we kind of left it that it was probably a bit of nerve damage from the overfilling. It's subsided over time, but I still get pain when I have a virus/cold.windy day etc. It's a lot better now, though.

He is a specialist with all the bells and whistles (microscopes, etc), v experienced. (Also more than a wee bit arrogant with it)

In SW London

Shame I'm up North. I was pleased with my dentist because he's obviously skilled but not arrogant at all. He only does difficult teeth rather than routine and is by dentist referral only.

In your shoes I'd go for a second opinion. There is nothing worse than dental pain.

lamandler · 28/03/2018 22:01

Thanks, will do that. Hurts lots tonight Sad

Im in this situation too OP, nhs dentist is having a third go at it on tuesday but I have already booked a private root canal on friday with a specialist. i wish i had never gone in about it, previously it was troubling me only when i ate something sweet. since iv had root canal on it its become sensitive to pressure and temperature as well as anything with the slightest amount of sugar. i do alot of salt water swishing which really helps but when im out and about i keep pain killers with me, the first tingle and im taking 400mg Nurofen as its so painful. i cant bear this for 7 weeks or 3 months as a PP said. but i dont want to lose the tooth either.

I’m a dentist and when one of my back molars caused problems which needed root canal treatment I elected to have it extracted. It had a fracture in it and although only painful when eating I’d had enough of it when it stared causing severe pain. The relief was incredible and being able to eat again on that side of my mouth was fantastic.
I don’t miss the tooth.
Not all root treated teeth are successful and all successfully treated teeth will fail eventually. We have to inform patients of this when planning treatment. I do carry out root treatments but tend to send complex molars to a specialist who is brilliant (Midlands). He will only treat teeth he considers suitable and admits he takes out far more teeth than before he specialised in endodontics.
And see your dentist, it could be that you have damage to a neighbouring tooth that is causing the pain which may be more straightforward to treat.
