Hi all

So just found out my son 5yrs is longsighted , his prescription is +4.5 ? Please someone tell me a success story that might mean he won’t need glasses forever full time . I’m aware he most likely will always have them but I long to hear a story that means he can go play in the playground without them eventually and need them for classroom only.

I know in a years time I probably will feel different and if he doesn’t ever improve I’ll be ok and use to him in glasses but now I long for a bit of hope

Probably long term given the prescription. Around the same value as dd's and she's had hers from 18 months old (now age 14).

When he gets older contact lenses couk5d be an option too. Dd hasn't tried them and likes her specs

DS has a similar prescription and has just started wearing contact lenses for weekly rugby, he's 10.

And I want to say that I get it, I too remember feeling like this was a bad thing and honestly he's never cared, never suffered, never been teased. It's really not a big deal to him, and hence it stopped being one to me, hth.

I’ve just asked 23 yo about this. At 5 his eyes were + 4.5. He still wears glasses all the time but reckons he could manage without. He doesn’t play any sports where you need to see little balls though! His prescription is now +1 or less but he has astigmatism too. He finds if he tries to read without glasses his eyes do feel strained. One of his brothers was +6 at that age. His has gone down too but only a bit, +5 & +4.5 l think now. Not sure this will cheer you. They both look good in glasses. 23 yo was really annoyed at needing glasses at 5. He’d had a test with ‘normal’ result the previous year (though l have wondered if that was correct as it seems a very quick worsening). He now reckons it was pure vanity at 5 a dh got used to them quickly.

I’ve had glasses from pretty young, it’s just part of me, they don’t bother me and I’ve never felt negative about them. I’m in fact very well attached to them! I’ve never really gone for contacts and now I’ve discovered prescription swim goggles I have no issue

That should be ‘and he’ on last line. Nothing to do with dh!

Hmm..probably will need them long term.
My DS2's first pair (at 6 months of age!) were +4.50. Over the next 10 years they got worse and worse.. peaked at +8.50, but then as his face /eyes grew they levelled out and the prescription actually decreased...he's around +6.00 now.
Unfortunately the astigmatism increased and he can't wear contacts.

Glasses really are no big deal now, having worked in Primary school for the last 14 years, SO many little ones have glasses, as thankfully eyesight problems are picked up early... I've never seen any teasing, and often there is 'cool glasses' envy ! Give it a few months and they will simply be part of his face.. my DS2 looks really odd to me without.

His three siblings all gradually acquired glasses too, and it hasn't held them back with sport/ girlfriends/boyfriends/looking fabulous!
