DH has chicken pox - can I catch shingles ? Have a rash on tummy ...

Dh is in the process of scabbing over now but this morning I have woken up with a rash that goes across my tummy and around my sides. It looks a bit like a heat rash, slightly raised and is a bit sore (a bit like mild sunburn). I have one tiny red spot with a yellow pin prick head on it but that's all.
From what I can remember and read, you can't catch shingles from chicken pox but a friend of mine insists that you can.
Can someone advise before I bother the docs please
Lord, that's all I need as dd who is 3 hasn't had chicken pox yet and so we are just waiting for her to go down with it.

You can't catch shingles from chicken pox. When you have chicken pox the virus stays in your body, within the nervous system I think, and if you get particularly run down then it can come out as shingles.

It's a common myth that if you're older you can catch shingles from chicken pox! Your friend is wrong! Hope you're all better soon.

What tortoiseSHELL said

I also remember reading a little while back that there was research into adults who had had chickenpox being exposed again via their children gave them a "booster" protection against the virus and they were LESS likely to get shingles later in life.

There was concern that with widespread use of a chickenpox vaccine in children that adults wouldn't get this much needed "booster" and shingles cases would increase as a result.

It's possible it could be but only because you're stressed, I think - you can't actually catch it per se from contact with CP.
Hope it isn't - but do bother the Dr. as if it's shingles you NEED to get antiviral medication within hours of it appearing - not sure if it's 24hrs? - this can lessen its effects dramatically. GO NOW>>>>>

flightattendant · 09/05/2007 08:56

Just googled it, it's within 72hours apparently but I'm sure I've heard 24...? anyone know?
Just be on the safe side, worth asking Dr for sure.
Good luck!

You can't catch shingles from chicken pox. But your rash does sound a bit suspicious. Have you had chicken pox yourself? You could have shingles coincidentally if so. You should go to the doc and get it checked - catch it early if it is.

Trinityrhino · 09/05/2007 09:11

what rubberduck has read is also true

Tillyboo · 09/05/2007 12:01

Yeah, I have shingles.
Bloody Hell, what a nuisance. Starting to feel a bit rough but got some tablets from doc which should lesson the symptoms...... lets hope.

Hope you have caught it in time - and the drugs kick in early. My DH had shingles last summer, and passed Chickenpox to both DC too.
The symptoms lasted ages too.

nickytwotimes · 09/05/2007 14:32

tilly, hope you get better soon - shingles is horrid. get as much rest as possible!!??

Tillyboo · 09/05/2007 16:58

Do you always get blisters with shingles? How soon do they develop?
I had the rash this morning but it's very faint now and I tingle and sort of itch where the rash is...

My skin feels very tender and I get odd little pin prick feelings every now and again which are quite uncomfortable.

I've started the medication but I was under the impression that I'd still get the blisters, or am I being impatient ?
Any experts out there who can tell me what to expect ? The docs this morning was heaving and I didn't get much info from the GP

Oh poor you, what a nightmare, that's just what you DON'T need...
Not an expert at all, but from what I've read, it's usually the nerve pain that is the worst thing - not the actual blisters. What have you been given? Could have a look for you on google.
Hopefully it's the one that kinda stops the virus in its tracks, there is a very effective treatment that works if taken soon after the onset. Hopefully this means it'll be much less bad than otherwise, you don't want to be in pain for weeks/months.
How is DH now? Has he been very poorly, or not too bad?
Get better soon, both of you

Oh Tillyboo

The important thing to remember is that you can give chickenpox to other people if you're suffering from shingles so usual rules about avoiding pregnant/immunocompromised people apply.

Hope you recover quickly and the medication helps it stop it in its tracks.
